AFP: North Korea's Kim goes to the zoo
SEOUL (AFP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, believed to have suffered a debilitating stroke earlier this year, has visited Pyongyang zoo to give advice on its reconstruction plans, state media reported Tuesday.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim "gave on-the-spot guidance to the Central Zoo" during a tour in which he visited the park's aquarium as well as its tiger and bear enclosures.
The report of the undated visit appeared to be the latest attempt by Pyongyang to dispel rumours that Kim has been partially paralysed by a stroke.
The reclusive regime on Monday released the latest in a series of pictures of the 66-year-old leader, including one showing him clapping.

DPRK top leader visits zoo: official newspaper _English_Xinhua
PYONGYANG, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), paid a visit to a Pyongyang zoo which is under reconstruction, the official Rodong Sinmun daily said on Tuesday.
Kim went around the aquarium, the tiger, bear and horse sheds and other places of the Central Zoo for a long while, the newspaper said, without giving a date for the trip.
Kim gave detailed instructions on the reconstruction and future operation of the zoo, the report said, adding that he was accompanied by senior officials of the Workers' Party and commanding officers of the Korean People's Army.

Well at least he is getting out and about, though I thought North Korea has ceased any communication with any other country??,

Then again we do send several million to then each year from AusAid

The number of rare animals is steadily increasing at the Central Zoo at the foot of picturesque Mt. Taesong.

General Secretary Kim Jong Il made sure that the Central Zoo was reconstructed on an expansion basis, indicated an orientation and ways of sprucing it up well under a long-term plan and sent many rare animals to it in order to provide people with better conditions for cultural and emotional life.

At least 650 animals of more than 100 species have been sent to the zoo in more than 40 installments this year to be helpful to the working people's cultural and emotional life and the education and upbringing of youth and children.

44 dogs of 17 species for admiration were sent to the zoo recently.

88 dogs of 24 species for admiration have been lived the zoo since January this year to please the visitors.

Those animals that found their habitats in the zoo this year are rare animals habitant in our country and different parts of the world.

Among them are 60 gift animals of 9 species which were presented to Kim Jong Il from a Kuwaiti zoo. They are adding to the scenic beauty of the zoo.

Here is one for the true zoo enthusiast, a video taken at Pyongyang zoo the national zoo of North Korea.
Any information from this most secretive of countries is hard to obtain so i thought it would be worthwhile to post this video.
I will let you make up your minds on the place, but one thing to look out for is how spotlessly clean the zoo is, a few western collections could take points.

Well I'm sure we'd have spotless zoos if we were all brain-washed slaves of police states.

Thank you for sharing this nonetheless, it is interesting to see and I note that there appears to be no sign of giant pandas despite occasionally hearing mention of them.

there are pandas in a terrible cage and a monkey house with glassed over cages with backgrounds and branches

The zoo has actually traded quite a lot of native species with Kuwait Zoo..not that ive been to either!

Where is the link for the video please?

You don't see the logo in the attached screen capture?

I have the same issue (and I know a lot of other users do too - hence people putting a second post saying ''quoted for link" after posting a Youtube video). Youtube links just don't show up - until someone quotes the post, then a text link appears in the quote box.

This is how kiang's post shows up to me:

Ahh ... thanks - I wasn't aware of the issue.

I'll have a look into it.

Do you guys have Flash disabled or something?

I logged in from another browser and had no problems seeing the embedded YouTube video with either a regular user or a guest - so it's not a forum permissions problem like I thought it might be.

Flash enabled and up-to-date. It's also been the same across two home laptops and also my *ahem* work PC, all on different versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7).

Right - think I have a lead - video doesn't show up in Internet Explorer but it does in Chrome. So it appears to be browser-specific.

Ahh - yes, I tested in Chrome and Firefox, but not in IE ... you are right, it's not showing up for me either.

I'll look into it - thanks for the lead.
