Pyongyang Zoo - North Korea

Right - think I have a lead - video doesn't show up in Internet Explorer but it does in Chrome. So it appears to be browser-specific.

Okay - I've updated some code and it seems to be working for me in IE now.

Can you please reload the first page of this thread and see if it works now?

Yes - that's showing up fine now. The video lives! :D

Aw,cmon Maguari youre living in the dark ages! Lets get up-to-date...please! or does anyone fancy a round of the superlative parlour game "Technophobe Terrace"?-to be discussed in Leipzig at ZooHistorica young fella! Seriously Kiang, what a find..and the way the film looks around the zoo instead of the usual views of cuddly creatures[perhaps they havent got any].Actually it doesnt look THAT bad and its a long time since i saw a decent dog zoo-or was that the restaurant?[bit of a non-p.c. joke there]

I'm no technophobe - just a stick-in-the-mud - I'm so used to IE that every time I try a different browser I get annoyed at what's different within minutes and give up!

It is a great video, it's true (and I'm sure no-one would expect PC from yourself, Tim!).

Thanks, Sim, this video is very interesting. I think the evil Dear Leader himself was shown in the beginning of the video.

This Zoo looks like an American zoo back in the 1960s, they are very far behind in technology. Too bad all of their technology is going towards nuclear weapons. But then again, as badly as their animals are caged, they probably still treat their animals better than they treat their people! Also, it's not at all surprising that the Zoo is spotlessly clean -- the penalty for littering is probably execution.

Thanks Maguari for the lead to fixing the issue and Sim for sorting it.

It was well worth the wait and interesting to see what I'd imagine non of us are likely to see in person.
I was waiting for something awful like in some Chinese zoo's but it looked in the most part to be ok, the hoofed stock had decent sized enclosures, and I assume that the big cats did have large outdoor runs, the aquarium looked good too.
In the summer it would look very leafy, but it looked so cold for the filming, and those people with posed fake smiles and height of fashion Korean outfits were something to see!

One question, where do folks thing they would have got their bigger animals from (I'm talking elephant, hippo, lions and tigers)? Surprised that there was no panda in sight.

Um how do you know what they're saying?
I didn't know North Korea had zoos. What are their influences on the zoo community? What are their contributions?

Earlier in the thread it is mentioned that they got animals from Kuwait. I'm sure they got giant pandas and probably other animals from China which is their main supporter and if they have connections anywhere it is probably with the Chinese.

There is some info on Wikipedia on where they got their animals:

Elephants at the zoo are said to be one of the chief attractions; all the elephants are descended from the family of a single "hero elephant" given to Kim Il-sung by Ho Chi Minh in 1959. Kim Il-sung later criticised the zoo as "capitalist" because it kept elephants and other foreign animals, and reportedly instructed the zoo to keep only native animals. However, as of 2001, the zoo kept a variety of non-indigenous species of animals, including 400 given as gifts by heads of state and other foreign citizens. A significant number of those were the gift of a single Swedish citizen, Jonas Wahlström, director of the Skansen Aquarium; they are housed in the Animal Museum, which opened as a new exhibit in 1985. According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper, the zoo also has a parrot which can squawk "Long live the Great Leader, Comrade Kim Il-sung" in English. The Central Zoo conducted its first zoo exchange with South Korean zoos in April 2005, in which they received llamas and hippopotamuses, among other species of animals. Many of the animals sent south, which included Asiatic black bears, African ponies, and Siberian weasels, were first quarantined by South Korea before being shipped to their destinations.

Because dog ownership is forbidden in Pyongyang for hygiene reasons, and the government officially criticises the practise of keeping dogs as pets, the Central Zoo also has dogs on display for visitors to see, including eight raised by Kim Il-sung and given to the zoo after his death in 1994. A pair of Jindo dogs given by Kim Dae-jung to Kim Jong-il at their 2000 summit, are also kept at the zoo; they produced a litter of five puppies in September 2001.

If they're an isolated country, then how do they get their animals?
North Korea isn't isolated, it just doesn't like western countries. The government has strong ties with China and until recently with the former Soviet Union. I would imagine a lot of animals came from those countries. They also have ties to other southeast Asian countries such as Laos and Myanmar.

Yes I have recently learned this. Some animals they got from Kuwait and South Korea as well.

So, if I wanted to, I could fly to like China or something like that and go into North Korea to visit the zoo!!
