The first post of my Toronto Zoo visits thread.

Today at the zoo:
- Snow leopard cubs not on exhibit again, a big dissapointment
- Beaver/otter exhibits still under renos/construction
- 2 red pandas on exhibit, in the same exhibit! Finally they are out and together, possiblity of breeding I wonder?
- African Arts Festival happening at the zoo during July is being set up looks like its going to be amazing might have to go just for that!
- Baboon babies arevery cute! I think I saw three on exhibit today!

That's about it, until next time!

The snow leopard cubs have been on exhibit every day, almost always blocked outside and don't even have the option of going in until late evening when they keep the holding open. However, if you go during the day you can sit there for 3 hours easily and not even see them because they sleep all day within the rocks. I'd recommend going around 6:30pm as the sun starts to go below the trees, that's the best time. I almost always stay until around 9:00pm when security comes around, the keepers themselves don't mind at all.

lmao, really thanks for the tips! On the member preview dates for the Tundra Trek im going at around 5 and staying until the opening!

The 2 red pandas you saw in the same exhibit were proabably the females. The male just arrived 3 or so weeks ago so he is most likely still in quarantine.

Even if he is out, he is probably seperated from the girls to get him used to the exhibit and then to introduce him to them

Then again, I could be wrong and he could have just been in the trees or hiding

No, the keeper was there at that time and said that they are introducing him to one female at a time. the second female was in holding!

I would like to add one more thing. The cormerants in the Australasian Pavilion have added to the atmosphere greatly! Especially when you see them swimming and diving for fish! The only thing I would change there is upgrade the filter for the billabong because its very cloudy!

Well at the zoo again today, very interesting!
-Tundra is comming a long nicely, looks amazing. It looks like only signage needs to be added now!
-Beaver and otter exhibit is finished water added!
-Cormerants and grizzly bears were very active and a joy to watch!
-New bird exhibits (?) going in the Indo Pavilion as well as a new turtle exhibit at the exit of the Americas Pavilion
-Got to feed a stingray today and and inch from touching a shark!
-The African Arts Festival is also very neat! Hope it returns next year!

MORE ADDITIONS
-Snow leopard cubs are adorable and they are still extreamly small!

Thanks! Did the beaver/otter exhibit look any different?
Yeah, last time I went, I could never touch those darn SHARKS!

They installed new filters in the beaver/otter exhibit and added some rockwork but not too much difference. The sharks are extreamly hard to touch!

Ah, I reach so far to touch the sharks, but they all just crowd towards the middle of the pool or near the waterfall. :(

Well, I went to the zoo on Wednesday 26, 2009. What a great trip. A friend and I arrived at the zoo at around 3pm and left at 8pm. It was a blast we did the whole zoo. She even commented on how impressed she was with the animals activeness and enclosures, Wednesday was her first time in 10 years. (So she had to catch up on a lot). She was absolutly blown away by the Tundra Trek, she said she never knew that polar bears could be so entertaining and huge!

I must say going at 3 till close in the summer is the best decision I have ever made, all the animals were extreamly active and it wasn't crowded at all even for the polar bears! Some things I noticed:
- All Americas Pavilion exhibits that were underconstructions are now opened i.e. otter/beaver/turtle. Except for the Marine Room (Whats taking so long)
- There is a new turtle skulpture in the Americas Pavilion hanging above the marine room.
- In the African Pavilion, where the african clawed frogs were is all boarded up, took up some of the walkway, maybe a leak?
- Arctic Fox exhibit still under construction, no foxes yet but its moving along fast.
- Reindeer exhibit still isn't finished.
- Saw the baby moose, looks very healthy and active.

All very good news!

If the Marine Room is taking a long time, maybe its going to look really good :)

What changes ahve been made in the beaver/otter/turtle exhibit, more rockwork?

The African Pavilion is due to be renovated this winter, so maybe thats why they closed the frog exhibit (Is there any other news on this whole plan, I haven't heard many plans about it)

Good to hear the baby moose is nice and healty, I think this is Ashley's first calf

Awesome news on the Arctic fox exhibit! Im so glad this is finally underway

I thought the reindeer exhibit was finished long ago (Really wish they would have finished all these exhibit and then open the area up to the public)

Thanks for all the news Quartz!

The outside of the marine room hasn't changed much, they are probably installing new equipement which was probably the main reason for the reno.

Yes, more rock work in the beaver/otter exhibits. And the turtle exhibit was extensively redone to make it more of a Canadian Wetland.

The frog exhibit that I was talking about is on the Gorilla side of the pavilion, I don't think it would be a part of the renos.

The reindeer exhibit is half finished, its the back part of the exhibit and the house that needs to be completed still.

Another thing to add is the massive amount of African artwork in the Savanna at the zoo. I think that this festival is absolutly amazing but should be marketed a bit more!

The Tree Kangaroos have been off exhibit for a while as well. I think it may be because Chrissie might be pregnant.

That, or maybe there trying to see if they'll breed more successfully if its quiet?

Thank you for the update :)

Another thing I should add is the Pot-Belly Seahorses at the zoo have been switched to the Kuda Seahorses.

Glad to hear they did'nt sacrifice Lionfish instead for the kuda seahorses, as that was the original plan

Yea the lionfish is a hit, another thing to add is that the big tank has lots of larger fish now. I miss the schooling fish (only about 10 in each school now compared to 30 before)
