I emailed chester zoo a while ago, and today I got this response from Tim Rowlands today:
Hello Harry.

Thank you for your list of questions and i am happy to answer as many as I can.

- Is Kirana the Tiger pregnant?
I am afraid it is not our policy to announce possible pregnancies. And as for births we wait until we are sure both the dam and young are both ok however long we feel that takes on a case by case basis and then we announce it officially first, either with a press call or on our web site.

- Has Leia the Orangutan's baby been sexed and named yet?
Yes she is a female and the primate team is in a process of naming her, again not something we do to quickly as we want to make sure all is well with mother and baby.

- Is Martha the Orangutan too old to breed?
We believe that all of our potential breeding female Orangutans has a youngster.

- Whereabouts in the zoo will the African Wild Dogs be?
I can confirm that we are looking at an enclosure on the west side of the zoo, but the exact location is still to be confirmed.

- Are there any plans to breed Grevy's Zebra in the Future?
We will be following the stud book guide lines to hold a bachelor herd until we request or are requested to move into a breeding situation. All zoos should try and hold one bachelor species.

- And will Kevin the Orangutan be coming from Berlin now Donna has died?

As we now have a proven male Bornean we have no need to consider another male. He was not coming in due to Donna’s arrival.

I hope that helps with your enquiries.

Tim.

Didn't know they were planning to keep African Wild Dogs. Are they planned for next year?

African Wild Dogs are due at Chester in 2010.

The tigers have not yet mated, but they are getting on well.

Martha will be housed with Tuan again next year but is now believed to be past breeding age.

I have thought since they announced that they were hoping for tiger cubs this year that Kirana is a little young to be having cubs yet. Next year will hopefully be Chester's year for them.

Brilliant news about the wild dogs:)

Does this mean that martha has had a baby too?

No it means they think she is past it. Interesting about Kevin. Because Tuan mated all the females in his first week but the babies were a long time coming they must have assumed that he was not fertile and Kevin was to be the solution.

Kevin is genetically valuable so hopefully will be placed in a breeding situation somewhere else where his potential can be used.
The answer also indicates they aren't planning to have more than one breeding male each of Bornean & Sumatran at Chester.
