Chester Zoo Questions/comments about Chester Zoo

The zoo have looked at exhibiting two species of Asian gazelles, so Chinkara may be coming. I only heard about Bennett's and Goitred, neither of which they have yet.

Chinkara and Bennett's are one and the same species Gazella bennetti from Iran, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

The Philippine spotted deer at Chester number 6.5 on ISIS. I think it is only a matter of time before more and more collections in the UK start exhibitting and breeding these (apart from next candidate Colchester).

Don`t count on any hoof-stock coming into the country with the Blue-tongue out break that has occured today in the U.K,the 1 in Europe has held up the movement of so many animals already now,to the best of my knowledge it has delayed 1 Okapi,3 Addax,6 Bactrian Camels,8 Rothschilds Giraffes and an unknow number of Reindeer.

were these
Okapi - Chester/Bristol
Addax - Chester
Camels - ??
Giraffes - Marwell/Edinburgh/Chester
Reindeer - Highland Wildlife Park

Okapi,Addax=Chester the Camels/Reindeer=Hammerton?The Giraffes were for i believe Chester/Belfast/Longleat/Woburn and another collection which doesn`t at present hold any but used to will check with the director of the collection to see if i can say where,as i`m not sure if they have said they are getting them back

i believe banham zoo have built a new giraffe house, edinburgh zoo will not have giraffes for at least 7 years.

From this I deduce that at Cheswter I saw a 'splinter' group of 1.1 (plus female young) therefore the main(unseen) group is probably 1.3 and the(unseen) surplus male group is 4.0....

Hopefully we can see some decent little herds growing up in selected collections in the future.

The group you saw was in the original enclosure for the deer at Chester and housed 2.2. Later a second group was formed from these animals and their young and was placed in the offshow area. These are breeding very well, the ones on show are not breeding as well. I don't know what their policy is with regard to the surplus males. I'll see if I can find out on the Adopter's Day, unless someone else finds out before then.

Right... but I only saw a pair plus(I think) a female fawn. The pair are presumably the original breeders?

Just to draw some attention to this...

Look at the news Zoogiraffe has kindly divulged on the hornbill thread in the Chester Forum. Exciting stuff- thanks!

when they get the planning application sorted their is a bridge going in over their from back of twilight zone to somewhere round that area, the reason for the delay is that someone forgot to put the notice up along the bridleway that runs down the middle of the zoo!

Dear lord, what a shambles!

The zoo will be so much more user friendly when that bridge goes in and creates an obvious circuit. Can't imagine any reason for the planning permission not to be granted, unless they've come up with something wacky!

Yeah i've always found it rather annoting that you have to walk right from the owls and bongos area back to the entrance.

Also woud this give people a better view of the Philippine Spooted Deer

One female from the offshow group could go to Colchester, the zoo wants it down to 1.2 adults because these deer are not herd animals. The 4.0 surplus specimens are looking for a new home. Hopefully two fawns will be born soon, slightly later than usual.

Someone also wanted to know who looked after the mice in the Secret World of the Okapi but I can't find the post. It is the Giraffe team, who refer to them as 'little brown jobs.'

That was me Bongorob, thanks. I cant stand mice and hating that chesters rodent collection is getting bigger.

Good to know that Chester are finally planning to redistribute some of their Philippine deer to other UK zoos. The group at 6.5 was just getting way to big for them. It is fair that Colchester should now get a female to start up theirs.

Any indication which other UK zoos are ready to receive them?
