Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Rainforest of the Americas exhibit

Can we please get back on topic?

Be nice to know when the project will kick off officially and when building work will be completed!

This information on the zoo website says opening date is "To Be Determined 2013". The information is here: Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens

This page also has a link to the monthly construction report on the LA Zoo construction projects. The August report notes that the construction contract for the rain forest exhibit was just awarded. Hopefully this means that actual grading and construction will start soon.

I visited the LA Zoo on Sept 17 2011 and it looks like grading has started for the Rainforest of the Americas.

Thanks for the update David!

You are welcome. I'm puzzled why they haven't released any information and graphics about what they are actually building. The only clue is the picture on the website which shows a giant otter exhibit.

They had pictures of the elephant exhibit posted on the website and all over the fences around the construction site. Hopefully they will do the same for the rainforest. I want to know what species are part of it.

Considering the exhibit complex has gone through several designs, it makes sense why there is no definite exhibit plans/graphics on the zoo's website. Even the one that is shown of the giant otter exhibit is not final. Maybe after the LAIR opens we will get more information.

Hopefully they have a final (or near final) plan now that they are actually building it! As long as they have a good giant otter exhibit I'll be happy. Hopefully the jaguar will get good new digs as well.

I asked the LA Zoo over Facebook about what species will be in the exhibit and when we will see some preview drawings. Here is the reply I got so I guess this qualifies as official information:

"Rainforest of the America's won't open for at least another year and a half, it will contain a new habitat for giant otter, harpy eagle and several others. We won't be previewing it until it gets closer to opening time. In the meantime, we will start previewing LAIR (Living Amphibians Invertebrates & Reptiles) within the next few months. LAIR is scheduled to open early 2012."
