3.6K views · 56 reactions | Ralph Mitchell Zoo is happy to announce the arrival of five giant African millipedes! Found in the forests of Africa, giant African millipedes are the largest of the thousand species of millipedes. Giant African millipedes have 300-400 legs with four legs per body segment. Giant African millipedes are nocturnal. They don’t have eye; instead they use a pair of antennae to sense what’s around them. Their mandibles (jaws) are used to chew on plants and resemble those of insects. As a defense, it coils into a ball and secretes a foul fluid from its pores. Instead of breathing with lungs like mammals, millipedes breathe through tiny pore-like holes located down the length of their body called spiracles. Giant African millipedes can reach up to 12 inches long and can live seven to ten years. They eat dead and decaying organic matter such as dead logs, plants, and leaves. While five millipedes arrived at the zoo, only one is on exhibit. The remaining four will be behind-the-scenes and will be an option for ZooMobiles when their quarantine period is over (June 15). | Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo
