How did you work out that Upali brought it into the herd, because he`s been at the zoo for all via 3 births at the zoo and at present no other Elephants have died from the virus that have been bred at Chester.Lets just stop speculation and just wait for the zoo to carry out all the test`s to find out just what was the cause of death!

@ dragon(ele)nerd:

Do you actually read what other people write? Did you read my post at all?? Please inform yourself about the current research results re EEHV before making such statements - considering that the current research indicates that many asian elephants carry some herpes virus strains, your claim that "Upali almost certainly brought herpes to Chester" is nonsense. Same for the claim that Emmet brought herpes to Whipsnade!

Yassa, I had only mentioned that because it was said in another thread (because of his time in the US) and I just wanted it confirming whether it was correct or not.

I certainly didn't make any definitive claim that he did

ok,

well I shall now take the time to say actually apologise that I made such a direct claim. I must say though I did write the post when my mind was in a quite sadden state ( due to the death of an elephant juvinile)

@ Yassa, yes in times of the past when you and I have both contributed to a discussion, posts may have come across that I had not paid much attention to other's posts, but I say that this time I certainly read what others write. I can understand how you can assume that in some of my previous posts I have wrote. That I have not taked notice of some information.

"Do you actually read what other people write?"
But you should not make straight forward statments saying that I pay no attention to what other people write.

I have huge respect to basically everyone here, as I'm just young boy still and I haven't experinced some of the amazing things people on this site have. I find it too rude not to listen, well, read what such educated people have to contribute.

Am confused here, as lazydays is suggesting it was and is claiming to work at the zoo so if correct should be a realiable source.

what i've heard (working at the zoo) it was the virus.. :(

Or is it like most cases and you know a little more?

What he means is that 'Raman' was fathered by Upali, so that is how he brought it into the herd. If you look at those lists, it is interesting to note they have had deaths from HV at Zurich, involving 2 younger calves of Upali's parents.

I'm sure its all far more complex than this- but IF this is what Raman died from, there is that connection.:(

Yes thank you pertinax, I jumped to conclusions just based on the fact that Upali being from Zurich, brought it into the herd.

As the source saying it was the virus is from a new member claiming to work at the zoo can this source be believed until officially confirmed? Whilst things seem to be pointing that way, let's still hope it may not be the case. :o(

No official news about Raman's case of death yet then? I'm getting very interested in this case now....

No i don`t know more than i can say on this but wish i did know a bit more, but i`m sure given time the zoo will say exactly what the cause of death is!

We were at the Zoo today, and asked if there was any news about the cause of the death of Raman. A presenter told us that they have no idea what caused it until the results of the autopsy are known. She said that the only sign that something was wrong with him was that he was a tiny bit lethargic, so it seems that they haven't even got symptoms on which to to base or suggest a possible diagnosis. An elephant keeper also told us that there was nothing obvious wrong with Raman, and that his death was therefore unexpected.

All the other elephants were out in the paddock, including Upali, and were enjoying some carrots. The keeper said that Thi was given a time of quiet on her own, and was then happy to re-join the herd.
