Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this place. Got a trip to Israel coming up soon and have some spare time, thought I might check it out but was wondering if anybody knows nything at all. Is it worth it or a waste of time? Any info would be great.

They do but I can only get one page of it in english, doesn't tell you that much about it. . . except that it's the largest animal collection in the middle east with breeding herds of african and asian elephants.
 
They have one of the best breeding programs for both species of Elephants. Offspring from their original breeders can be found all over the world.
 
Ramat Gan are the world leaders in breeding African and Asian elephants, although i believe Cabarceno are catching up with them in numbers born.
They have also bred gorilla recently.
Are again world leaders along with Emmen in breeding Marabou stork, and they have supplied European zoos with Thompsons gazelle to kick start a breeding programme.

African elephant
Safari Ramat Gan currently maintains 3.4.1 (ISIS data). I believe the unsexed one is the male calf born to cow Bahati in 2006. Cow Norris had a calf in 2005. The African breeding cows are all relatively getting on now stemming from imports in 1964. It is particularly sad that both cows Aviva (last calf 1987) and Motek (last calf 1978 with another bull) have not bred for a good many years. On another downward note; most calves at Safari Ramat Gan have been male for some unknown reason. SRG needs to reinvent a few younger unrelated cows to continue the breeding effort and maintain its no. 1 position. Amelia Terkel is the EEP Studbook Keeper for Loxondonta africana.

For Cabarceno no figures are forthcoming from ISIS (it does not report to ZIMS/ISIS). On Dan Koehl's site Cabarceno is lised as having 3.11. Its last calves have been born in 2005 (0.1) and 2006 (0.1). Sadly, their breeding bull Chisco died in 2005 and allthough a bull Seferino was reportedly imported in 2006 (no mention of it on DK site).

Marabou stork
Safari Ramat Gan currently have 1.0.2. No chance of breeding without a female (and at least continuosly so since 2005). I know al Wabra WP, Cottbus, Dvur Kralove, Emmen and Koeln are the regular breeders of marabou storks. Deconstruction of a myth?

Thomson's gazelle
Safari Ramat Gan supplied the ground stock for Arnhem and Poznan to initiate breeding herds in continental EAZA zoos. Sadly, Safari Ramat Gan has not fared well lately and only 2.5 remain (with no breeding reported). In contrast both Arnhem and Poznan have had 4+ calves inside last 6 months. Another myth gone?

My real criticism at Safari Ramat Gan is the lacklustre English language page. It does not contain any information for the tourist or zoo fan at all. My Hebrew is not yet up to standard (my Arabic certainly is ...) ;)

I noticed as well they have taken on Somali wild ass, did they come from Hai bar?
 
I'd love to go to Israel one day to see the beautiful zoos espicially Ramat Gan, have to wait though till 18 so I can get an Australia passport, because of my parents I have a Malaysian passport,

No, you do not look like a fool. Ignorance is bliss, getting informed on some issue is quite another subject matter! So, you learn and learn, know more, yet you realise you know a little less! :D

The great thing about this forum really is that news travels faster than the PR or marketing can muster and I have learned some much on zoos the world over ..... Simply, great fun!

Regarding the Somali wild ass. Yes, Safari Ramat Gan maintains the surplus stock of Hai Bar. The last count was 2.0. I sincerely hope EAZA can manage to import both to continental Europe and give Zoo Nuernberg and some other zoo a new breeding male (perhaps even al-Wabra might be tempted, I know they do require an unrelated male to pretty soonish)!
 
The Tisch Family Zoo (The Biblical zoo) is also worth a visit, a bus ride from central Jerusalem or an easy train ride - the station is near the zoo - from Tel Aviv. I went there the other day and am about to post a review
 
elephants

Hey, i was just surfing the Elephants Encyclopedia - facts and information about elephants since 1995 website and noticed that Ramat Gan has moved all of it's breeding aged elephant cows out of the collection. This has left them with only 1 cow under 30 (La Petite) and her calf La Belle. Although many of their elephants have given birth in their 40's i'm just wondering if they have anymore plans to breed their elephants after such a successful history (41 births from both taxa).
 
many of the zoo's offspring have been spread all over the world because of Motek being so successful, next of kin in Israel would probably either be from Jerusalem from Teddy or which is unlikely kiriat motskin, there isn't a unrelated bull around so perhaps there best chance at breeding is to be transferred, but then again it would be a waste of the new enclousre that was made last year.

I would just like to know what is the case with Victor and Japatee?
They are both only born a year apart supposed both to Warda.

Victor was born October 23rd 1993
and Japatee was born on August 19th 1994.

I've read the Japatee has amazing tusks though has tail and trunk defects.
Did Warda at the time go into Labour extremly early ?

I have never learned of any ele preg so short term! ;)

Your data should read: Chapati - MotekxAviva (1994/08/19) transferred to Thai elephant camp (Thai National Elephant Institute/Thai Elephant Conservation Center).

ah thank you! the only other outcome I could of thought was that they got the cows wrong.
Just another point is that Japatee ( chapati) looks very different from his siblings Teddy, Alexander and Victor.
 
40!! wow, hope they can find some of them good homes. Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Ukraine! that's a great export list.

how many hippos is the exhibit supposed to be built for?
