Ranč pri Žiline (village Oškerda) is a small private unlicensed zoo and entertainment park in northwest Slovakia. They keep among others animals also big cats.

Three days ago, the owner of this place went to cuddle with an adult lion and got killed.

The zoo lacks adequate holding capacity for its big cats. Already 4 years ago, veterinary officials prohibited it to keep any. The owner tried to sell them but it looks like with little to no success.

After the owner died, 2 lions were shot/euthanised. The fate of remaining 16 big cats (normal coloured lions and tigers - based on online photos) is open. Bratislava zoo shows interest to take one tiger. If no new place is found for the rest of them, they will be shot too.

So, if you have spare capacity and valid licence, this is an opportunity to get big cats just for transport costs. Think about the PR and donations you can get by participating in such rescue action.

Greens Zoological, Rescue & Rehabilitation Kingdom in India has showed interest in 2 lions nad 9 tigers. Export import has been issued, Indian import permit is still lacking.

An update:

Above mentioned 11 big cats were successfully transported from Slovakia to Greens Zoo in India last year. The owner (very weathly man) sent a private trasport plane to airport Ostrava to pick them up.

Three lions could not be exported to India because their origin was not sufficiently proven by documents and thus they couldnt get CITES export/import permit. Out of these, 1 lion died due to illness and the very last remaining two lions will go to Malkia Park. Malkia park still needs to raise 20.000 euro for construction costs to accomodate them.

Ranč pri Žiline is now run by two sons of the previous owner. It´s closed during winter. It won´t keep any big cats or other dangerous species anymore. It´now more like a petting farm with entertainment attractions for small kids. But they still have few wild species on show like owls, saker falcon, turtles, small parrots etc.
