Ranua Wildlife Park Ranua Zoo news

Ranua unfortunately announced the death of their Pallas Cat, Mortti.

He was suffering ailments related to the old age.

They are hoping of getting a new Pallas Cat, but there are no anything definite at the moment.

Ranua has announced the loss of their stud male finnish forest reindeer, Sampo, due to old age.
He had had an important role when providing new gene flow into zoo population and into rewilding program as well.

But on the bright side.

The zoo has got an entirely new specie: amur leopard cat.

A female, Maia, was transported there from Korkeasaari zoo.

It´s nice that zoos still hold on amur leopard cats. I was afraid few years back they will wither away because one zoo after another was phasing them away.

Three young Finnish forest reindeers were tranported from Ranua zoo in November.

Now they have announced that one of them, Castor, has gotten his own harem in Nordens Ark, Sweden.

Other two has not been identified further (yet), but that they too are in European zoos.

It has not been officially announced in media, but for example visit Rovaniemi region has shared a video from zoo. In the video, you can see them having a musk ox baby!

The Musk ox has now been officially announced. His(? sorry Finnish lacks gender pronouns so it is impossible to know, but they shared a blue heart with the name so maybe???) name is Vimma.

Ranua has a new european mink male, Potkur.

I am not sure how well european minks have been breeding in Ranua. Never remember hearing about kits/pups/however the minklings are called.

But at least they keep trying.

Ranua zoo has now been able unite their new pair of otters.

Harald, a male otter, arrived at the end of 2024 and is now meeting Alma.

Otters are part of EAZA Ex-situ conservation program and the zoo wishes for baby otters already for this summer.
