Rare and new at the zoos of europe

I remember seeing a temporary reptile collection in a shopping centre in Cairns. It was the first time I've seen a live frilled lizard

Oddly, Barleylands farm & craft village in Billericay have acquired 2 four eyed opossums (Philander opossum)
Where is that from? I had a quick look on their Facebook but didn't see anything.

I see they opened a nocturnal house a year ago which their website says has jerboas, tenrecs and skunks (all unusual to me, but perhaps not in a UK context). Also "sugar guilders" :D

Thanks for this, I'd never heard of this place until tonight and it's less than an hour from me!!

Generally they seem to be pets and farm animals - that's what their Facebook focuses upon - but they have their new Nocturnal / Tropical House and also a bird of prey display. I'd visit just for the Nocturnal House.

Jerboa are pretty scarce these days!

The opossums have been there a while I believe; the result of a sizable batch of Neotropical opossums which entered the European private trade a few years back, also including the woolly opossum at BestZoo and the Linnaeus Mouse Opossums formerly at Frankfurt.

Private communication I received a few days ago suggests the nocturnal house holds the following:

  • Axolotl
  • Gooty sapphire ornamental tarantula
  • Goliath bird eating tarantula
  • Greater Egyptian jerboa
  • Egyptian fruit bat
  • Striped skunk
  • Dwarf crocodile
  • Alligator snapping turtle
  • Tailless tenrec
  • Lesser hedgehog tenrec
  • Long-eared hedgehog
  • Gambian pouched rat
  • Sugar glider
  • Four-eyed opossum

Can also confirm this is definitely true. An impeccable source (who may be along to identify themselves at some point!) has visited and seen (and photographed) the opossums this last week.

I visited today and saw one individual, the farm is very child based with a few rare breeds like bagot goat but I really enjoyed the nocturnal house and reptile house, outside this is a bird of prey area with servals, meerkats and a ‘Savannah cat’ which I believe is a hybrid of serval and domestic cat. I also believe that these species are not ‘owned’ by the farm but by the imperial bird of prey academy which operates within it.
I can also confirm that @TeaLovingDave ’s list is correct:)

6 for the global challenge!! Who would have thought it?! This potentially would add more to my total than any UK zoo!!

On a zoo tour last month @Maguari mentioned that he had referred to me on this thread - I'd never have guessed. Thanks for that description, too kind!

I did indeed visit with @ShonenJake13, having spotted a photo buried on Facebook early this year. We were impressed by the breadth of the collection, and found the opossums delightfully active all afternoon.

Originaly did I intend this thread to be a place to share three types of news,
- New species coming (back) to europe, both imports and from private keeper/breeder (think then the thread species (re)gained did not exist yet, but neither am I sure nor is that thread made much use of either)
- the spread of a species, what would sort of also include breeding succes of these relatively rare species
- also a space where news on potential new arrivals could be shared like platypuss, bilbies and blonde capuchin monkeys

There are several species that did not get mention yet.

I was recently suprised to see a rather large coconut crab at the tierpark bochum.
