Rare birds in zoo collections

I would really like to see some photos of rare birds from collections around the world. By 'rare' I would like to reference the list posted on the World's Rarest Birds website, a list of which can be found at the following url:

I would like to start off with two photos of my own. Anyone interested?

1. Hen Vietnamese Pheasant from Antwerp zoo

2.Baer's Pochard from Cologne zoo

The vietnam pheasant is now considered to be an inbred version of the edwards' pheasant.

I have a pretty crappy photo or two of a feral yellow-crested cockatoos in Hong Kong.

Definitely! The only one on the list i've seen in the wild is the Gouldian finch (which i once bred to the sixth generation from wild-caught stock)...and i've seen the Noisy Scrub Bird but it looks like it's been taken off the list - perhaps i just didn't find the name.

Okay, just to keep things moving, here is another. A superb Siberian crane at Cologne zoo last year.

I just realised that Baudin's Black Cockatoo is on the list - have seen this bird in the wild a few times and have photographed it...now to find the photo...

I have photos of just one of the white-tailed black cockatoos, taken at Ballarat Bird Park, but I cannot find them on this computer.

I've seen "real ones" on Komodo so I guess I get quadruple bonus points ...but my photos are crappier than yours!

I have only fairly recently moved back to Australia after living in Europe for the last 20 years so have had to become accustomed to names like 'Baudin's cockatoo' and 'Carnaby's cockatoo' - growing up in this area, we just knew them as White-tailed/Yellow-tailed/Red-tailed - anyway, here's another photo to keep the thread going.

A very old photo - around 1993 - of Thick-billed parrots at Edinburgh zoo. This was a photo from a manual camera and the negative was scanned and edited.

the Carnaby's is the white-tailed black cockatoo of the wheat-belt and is the one that is commonly seen around Perth for part of the year. The Baudin's is the white-tailed black cockatoo of the karri forests and is not generally seen in Perth as it is much rarer and much more restricted in its diet. They are difficult to tell apart from one another if you're not familiar with them. I've seen both species at the Perth Zoo, but only the Carnaby's in the wild.

Ah so now i know - we have one or two flocks of Carnaby's that often visit the larger trees in the garden and can be seen flying around the area. Red-tailed Blacks are also reasonably common but then we are just on the edge of the southwest forests and the Wungong reserve is quite close.

In which case the Baudin's I've seen are in the collection of the Armadale Reptile & Wildlife centre

I had a count-up and from the birds on that list I have seen 27 in the wild, and 33 in captivity. Now I'll be the first to admit that my photos of wild birds are pretty rubbish, but I'll see what I can come up with photo-wise.

Well I'm certainly impressed! Hope to do some birding later this year but i doubt if i will catch up with you.

(I could point out that 12 of those 27 I've seen wild are native to New Zealand, so I had a bit of a head-start )

I've seen 43 in captivity, but none of them in the wild (from memory).

Had a quick scan and (also from memory) I've seen 67 or so in captivity* - but again, none wild that I could find.

*probably getting on for a dozen thanks only to Walsrode!

Well i'm planning a trip to Europe next year but will probably only have time for three zoos - Frankfurt, Basel and Zurich. Will have to check out Walsrode but i think Walsrode is a bit too far out of the way for the time i have.

I was wondering though, since some of you have seen so many in captivity and in zoos, then maybe you can limit your list to those that are EW and CR. You can sort the list by clicking the hyperlinks on the left of the main list.
