Rare birds in zoo collections

Well will probably post as many as possible but will start with two that are either EW or CR.

1. Socorro Dove - London zoo
2. Montserrat Oriole - Male & Female - London zoo (These are exhibited as two seperate pairs in different displays - i believe they were obtained after the disastrous cyclone that destroyed much of the island's habitat some years ago)

I was wondering though, since some of you have seen so many in captivity and in zoos, then maybe you can limit your list to those that are EW and CR.

On that subject - since you have better access to Healsville than i have, do you have any good photos of the Orange bellied parrots? Mine weren't that good.

* this chick was from a wild-laid egg hatched in an incubation cage and released upon hatching. I saw adult wild birds but couldn't get photos of them.

I think i only have one more from the CR & EW list so am including one from the DD list as well.

Looks like we might be getting a bit short on the EW and CR birds so just a couple to keep us going from the EN list

1. Regent honeyeater - Melbourne zoo
2. Golden-shouldered parrot - Peel zoo

Shouldn't the Helmeted Honeyeater be on the list too? There are less than 100 left in the wild I believe. (Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary have a few, and are involved in a captive breeding programme I think. If only I could find my pic....)

helmeted is a subspecies of yellow-tufted. The list only details full species (or what BirdLife International considers full species). Their data isn't always the most up to date either: e.g. the "northern brown kiwi" of their list is given a population about 10,000 birds higher than what it actually is now, and they include the critically-endangered Okarito brown kiwi (A. rowi) within the species even though it was split quite a few years ago now (this species numbers about 300 birds, give or take).

I didn't know they had Philippine eagles at Planckendael - i shall have to make an effort to get there the next time i am in Belgium. The last time i went there was way back in about 2002 and i'm sure i didn't see them.

Ah that would explain it. I had a very frustrating hour or so at Wuppertal last year trying to get shots of the Harpy eagles but i only had limited time so no success there unfortunately.
