Rare species in European zoos

The Berlin Zoo also has a pair of Kagus from Walsrode.
The Kagu`s in Paris are not from Walsrode, they are on loan from a private french breeder who has a lot of them. Unfortunately he refuses to cooperate or exchange animals which originate from Walsrode, which is selfish and awful.

Who is this french breeder? Are his birds from Sandiego? Why does he refuse to cooperate with Walsrode?

I don't mean to be mean, But why? Why does this man(Or woman hehe), who obviously cares about kagus, just allow his birds to mingle with the waslrode specimens. In My opinion, he should be bothered about the captive status of this bird and a reintroduction programme to the wild. Then there is the fact that this breeder may be worried about inbreeding. Maybe their birds are related to the walsrode birds. Anyway, inbreeding maybe the only way foreward if the captive population does not increase soon. I hope it doesn't get to that.

One of the Baird's Tapirs (probably a juvenile male) from Wuppertal moved to Berlin Zoo (that would be west, east is called Tierpark). Don't know wheither Berlin will try to import a mate but i'll keep you updated.

Madrid wil receive two giant panda's. It's 6-year old male Bingxing and 4 year old female HuaZui Ba. Both will come from the Chengdu reserve. They will probably arrive around September.

Yes!! More animals spreading across europe. Chester has turned down the opputunity to have Giant Pandas, as the zoo would have to pay a lot of money, but they're a boring species anyway.

Was Chester offered the opportunity directly or just generally? I find the whole Panda scenario quite interesting- I think Chester probably could make the money back on them. I could imagine London or Edinburgh getting them too- but it's probably unlikely.

Chester were offered a pair of non-breeding pandas for hire at a cost of £1,000,000 a year over 10 years. The zoo has contributed a huge amount of money to in-situ panda conservation. I agree with Hornbills comments. They're boring animals to exhibit.

Madrid Zoo have had Giant Pandas before(probably in the 'political gift' era.)
They successfully bred at least one (male) before the female died, followed by both males later on. At least they have experience with them, but climatically it all seems very wrong to me.

Walsrode now has Kiwis, possibly from Frankfurt.

Tying together two previous posts in this thread, the mysterious private keeper in France who breeds the Kagus also had (or has) Red Uakari - there was a short write-up about his collection in IZN a few years ago.

yes i read this he lives just outside paris with aroun 30 kagus and one lone uakari and he has bred great blue touraco and many other rare parrots, on another of his properties according to the article he has 60! blue crane

There is one pair of Ratels at Howletts(not at Port Lympne) They were among the original animals in John Aspinall's (then) private collection which also included Gorillas, Tigers and Asian antelope, Bison etc. They still live in a small enclosure surrounded by a low concrete-wall sited close to the original Gorilla area. I don't know how old this pair is, whether either of them is an original animal or if they have ever bred these interesting (and very aggressive) animals.

Howletts bred Ratel once, I think in the late 70s or early 80s, I don't know what happened to the offspring but it was apparently the first and only UK breeding of the species. The Port Lypmne pair may have been older and died out a few years ago, meerkats now occupy their enclosure.

With regard to Aardwolves, both Twycross and Hamerton keep them, I believe Hamerton had cubs a few years ago, although I don't know if this is an isolated incident, or whether the remaining animals are too old to breed now.

What does hinter den Kulissen mean. I've seen it on that site Jwer informed us of.

Hinter = Behind
den = The
Kulissen = Stage, set.

In other words = Backstage

By the way, a manatee in Odense Zoo in Denmark just gave birth to a healthy baby, just 10 days ago. I would think that they count as a "rare species in European Zoos". You can see a video of the birth here
