Live ginkgo-toothed beaked whales have been observed and photographed for the first time, off the coast of Baja California in Mexico. It was previously known only from stranded and bycatch animals, and was among the most poorly documented of all large mammals.

Multiple individuals, including an adult male, a female with a calf and several juveniles, were observed. The scientists also confirmed that unidentified calls recorded in the North Pacific since 2020 belong to this species.

The full findings of the team will be published in the January 2026 issue of Marine Mammal Science.
