Rarest animals in UK collections

What about the 'rare or extinct in the wild and at least partly saved by captive breeding'? This would include fascinating [but not fashionable] things like Pere David Deer, Przewalski's Horse, Laysan Teal, Nene, Pink Pigeon & Madagascar Teal. Do we still have Mauritius Kestrel in the UK?

Do we still have Mauritius Kestrel in the UK?

Sadly, no (unless any 'retired' birds are still out there). It's for very happy reasons, though - the breeding program was effectively halted because it was no longer required - the species has been officially downgraded from Endangered to Vulnerable (which given it's tiny range it will probably always be). This was following a population increase from four wild birds at one point in the seventies to nearly a thousand now; the IUCN considers that the population is now more-or-less at capacity in Mauritius. This is of course thanks in no small way to JWPT/Durrell and their colleagues in the captive breeding programme and in the field.

So, it's sad for us that we can no longer see the species, but a very good news story for the bird!

RSCC still have black footed cats, I've been to that place recently and I've seen two animals, a female and their handraised young, serperated in two diffrent exhibit. They also have Aardwolfes, which are very rare in zoos, two. There are only thre holders of them in europe, all in the UK.

I'm so Sorry for the loss of UK's only Red Forest duiker, I din't knew the animal passed away. Does anybody knows the death cause, it was a young animal, born in 2009.
