Rarest animals seen in a zoo or aquarium

Has anyone got a possible timescale for when we could see kakapo in permanent captivity or abroad?

Not to understestimate your desire to see one, but I still think you might have to journey to NZ to accomplish that, even in years to come. I can't see them being sent abroad for the reasons mentioned above. Also remember Kakapos are almost exclusively nocturnal so a poor exhibit for zoos generally unless kept in expensive nocturnal housing, and even then probably very inactive as they are slow, ponderous birds in their behaviour. For most people (excepting Zoochat folk and zoophiles obviously) they wouldn't be much of a draw either.

But as stated previously, as the population(hopefully) increases, the chance of occassional individuals coming into captivity in New Zealand probably becomes higher.

Only just seen this thread..ive been lucky enough to see the vast majority of species listed and without doing a complete survey here are a few things off the top of my head that MIGHT not be on the other lists-

Diademed Sifaka [Duke]
Tattersalls Sifaka[Duke]
Hirola[Gladys Porter]
Arabian Tahr[Sharjah]
White-whiskered Spider Monkey[Wassenaar]
Tibetan Macaque[Barcelona]
Western Long-beaked Echidna[Moscow]
Scarlet Fruit Crow[San Diego]
Chinese Monal[San Diego]
Horned Screamer[San Antonio]
Giant Coot[Gladys Porter]
Maroon-fronted Parrot[Loro Parque]
New Caledonian Crow[Cotswold]
Round Island Boa[Jersey]
Thorny Devil[Alice Springs,both collections]
White Amphisbaenid[Oklahoma City]
Missed both the Grey Whale at San Diego Seaworld and the Black Wallaroo at Territory Wildlife Park by mere weeks sadly. And only once ever have i seen a Common Cuckoo on captivity[Walsrode]!

Tim Brown: Do you have any photos of any of the mammal species on this list?? Especially the Sifaka's, Hirola, Arabian Tahr, or Echidna?? Also does "Sharjah" still have Arabian Tahr and is it open to the public? I was lucky enough to see the Grey Whale at San Diego Seaworld and should put up the pictures soon.

I don't know if you specifically want pictures Tim Brown himself has taken, or if you just want pictures of the animals. In case of the latter, there is a picture of the long-beaked echidna of Moscow in the gallery: http://www.zoochat.com/1499/moscow-zoo-210367/.
There is also one at Zootierliste though I don't know if it's from Moscow Zoo or one of the former holdings.

I guess I was hoping Tim Brown had some photos, since I've already seen any already available on zoochat or zootierliste :)

My pictures of JJ the Gray Whale have been uploaded to the San Diego Sea World Gallery. Enjoy.

^Lovely:), giant eland, do you have a description or a picture of 'jj's' pool whilst at seaworld?

I posted every picture of JJ/her pool that I had. Not sure what part of Sea World it is now, but I remember a fairly large underwater viewing section as well as being able to see above the surface at certain parts. That's how I was able to get a picture of JJ sticking her head above the surface showing some baleen.

JJ was housed in the "Shamu Closeup" pool located next to Shamu Stadium.

Don't worry about it:), I'm very much grateful to you for the pictures, as it is a grate source of zoo history:), thankyou. And thanks for the info ituri, does anyone remember if there was a lot of controversy on the decision to take her into captivity at the time?

Sorry i havent been back on this sooner.im away quite a lot and dont do computer stuff on the run as-it-were.Pictures?...well its only recently that i went digital so none of the older stuff would be in a format that i could upload....if i could find em!Have a big room full of unsorted stuff of all kinds and quite frequently i buy books i later discover that i have already.Back to the points i can answer and yes the Arabian Tahr are off-show at Sharjah but anyone travelling should contact manager Paul Vercammen and im sure he would be very helpful. The same could be said of Moscow where the Western Long-beaked Echidna is also off-show.One day im going to sort the photos out with a view to a book on rare mammals in captivity as i have a number of friends and contacts with similar.Re.Cat-Mans query i dont remember much fuss on the Grey Whale as it was a rescue situation with the intention of returning the animal to the wild from the start

Some species I can think of:

Douc Langur, Aye-aye, Bamboo Lemur (Philadelphia)
Giant Panda (SD, Memphis)
Horned Parakeet (San Antonio)
Bare-throated Bellbird (DWA)
Shoebill (Houston)
Sumatran Rhino (Cincinnati)
Tayra (Sedgwick County)
Red Howler Monkey (DWA)
Superb Bird-of-paradise (SD)

That is very true, but I only included the bird species that I know they no longer have on exhibit in order to keep that list short. There are lots of others.

rarest animals seen in

Madagascar Crested Ibis at Durrell [Jersey]; only ones [ever?] in UK; and they're breeding.

I saw Philippine tarsiers when I visted Bristol Zoo in 1987. Zootierliste says this is the only year the zoo had them. Only one of the other zoo volunteers I talked to was interested in the tarsiers; he was in charge of the Small Mammal Trolley at London Zoo. Several of the other volunteers seemed keen to see species that they could also see at London Zoo.
