Rarest animals seen in a zoo or aquarium

Don't suppose you have photos - even poor ones - of the kodkod and skunk? Both are missing from the gallery and hence my taxonomy threads.
I'm afraid I don't have pics of the skunk because it was in the nocturnal house, I may have some very old ones of the guigna but I have to check out if they survived my latest loss of files.
Fantastic list! Do you happen to know if there are any Pichi, Leopard Seal or Guigna in Santiago or Buin currently?

Oh, I don't think so. The pichi was over a decade ago iirc and has been since replaced by hairy armadillo. The Leopard seal that was at Buin Zoo was a rescued young male that was on display only for a brief time back in 2010. And the guigna at Buin died of age-related causes in the early 2010s, and since then they haven't displayed any guigna (they have held wild guignas for brief periods at their rescue center though).

Bonobos are relatively common in world zoos I think. For sure much rarer than chimpanzees, but just in Germany there are not less than 6 holders of the species, and in USA they're a few too.

What about Bonobo's - only at Twycross in the UK ?

Quite a few Zoochatters will have seen them simply by their being held at major zoos, San Diego and Berlin for example. Bonobo are definitely much less commonly than many other great apes though.

(Also ironic I'm noting this as I missed them at San Diego :p)

Same here! I left thinking "I feel as if I missed something", Oh well, it's not a one zoo species.

Mammals
Red-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus) (Philadelphia)
Northern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) (San Diego)
Harp Seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) (Detroit)

Reptiles
Siamese Crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) (Detroit)
McCord's Box Turtle (Cuora mccordi) (Detroit)
Eastern Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis) (Detroit)

I thought it would be interesting to add the following species that I've seen, and that I consider rare enough to add here, despite the alagoas curassow, wich I already mentioned. These are the ones I remember now. Here we go:

Black lion tamarin - Belo Horizonte zoo and São Paulo zoo

Black-fronted piping guan - Zoo São Paulo and Parque das aves

Black-fronted titi - Belo Horizonte zoo

Blond capuchin monkey - Zoo São Paulo

Brazilian anual killifish - Belo Horizonte zoo (offshow)

Marsh deer - Belo Horizonte zoo

Pampas cat - Belo Horizonte zoo and Brasília zoo

Schneider's smooth fronted caiman - Zoo São Paulo

Southern muriqui - Zoo São Paulo

Stick insect (not sure about the species) - Belo Horizonte zoo (offshow)

I can't believe I forgot one of the rarest animals.
Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) (Detroit)

The harp seal is gone. I don't know what happened to it but they now have sea otters there. The Siamese crocodiles were sent elsewhere; the enclosure wasn't really big enough for them. There's a Chinese alligator there now. They're talking about getting him a female friend but I don't know whether that's going to happen soon.

I haven't seen the brown snake for a while. I don't know if it's off exhibit or sent elsewhere. Th'e zoo acquired its specimen from local authorities who seized it from a guy in the area who was illegally keeping it as a pet. There was at the time no antivenin for its bite in the western hemisphere, the keeper told me. The guy said he was being careful. Everyone says they're being careful and yet the maternity wards are still full.

I've seen a lone aardwolf at Twycross zoo. He was an old male who has now passed away. I'm not sure where else they are kept in the uk.
