Where are kiwi currently on public display? Bronx, Columbus, Toledo and Franklin Park? Off-show at the San Diego parks and Miami? SBWI and Pinola private? Am I reading correctly?
Does anyone know when they were taken off public display at the National Zoo? I recall they used to have an exhibit but sadly I didn't know enough about kiwi at the time of my visit (2006) to take an interest.
God, my memory is awful. I thought it'd had it's own exhibit entirely, separate from the bird house. My vague memory was seeing they had a kiwi house, and on a truncated afternoon visit, not knowing what a kiwi was, thinking it sounded skippable.
While it was in the bird house it did have its own nocturnal room that was skippable if you didn't want to go in. They also did demonstrations that gave much better views of them.

Thank you for the notice. We definitely skipped the bird house, unfortunately. I really wish we'd done that and Amazonia, but hindsight bias is clear, because I was probably too young to really appreciate either.
I really hope someday they can return to display at Brookfield and National, they're such unique animals, but I understand why they are hard to display and therefore hard to invest in, and all of them are of course helping the breeding program which is more important.
That's good to know. I wasn't sure if the incident might've sidelined those plans. Miami's a while off for me but maybe by the time I make my way up there I'll see them!
I've seen kiwis multiple times at Franklin Park (in 2020 and 2022), and on my single visit to Bronx, so those zoos should give you a pretty high chance of seeing them. Both are incredible zoos in their own right with other unique species as well (especially Bronx!), so it'd be worthwhile to make the trip out east if kiwis are a priority.

Thank you both for letting me know, this helps a lot. Bronx is definitely very high on my list and this pushes it a little higher still and Franklin Park is getting up there between kiwi, potto and me having an interest in Boston as a history nut. (Columbus is on the list too.)
