Does Adelaide zoo still have its Razor-billed curassow? I believe it is (was?) a hen.The only other in the region is also a hen, at Taronga.

Does anyone know where they came from? They must both be quite ancient.

I recall seeing one at a small private zoo in Queensland, Kirra zoo (which has been closed for years) in 1969.

Auckland Zoo used to have them (or at least one!) a couple if decades ago I guess. They must have come from Australia so I assume you guys were breeding them at one time?

Yeah i belove there are 2 hen left at adelaide, anyone who checks isis should be able to check

does anyone remember the Auckland Zoo ones? I found my old Auckland Zoo guidebook from 1979 which has it in (although the photo in the guide was taken at Los Angeles Zoo for some reason), and my sister took a photo of one at the Zoo around fifteen (?) years ago. The book "A Tiger By The Tail: a history of Auckland Zoo 1922-1992" has a stock-list for 1992 at the back which includes the species. Are there any still there?

Nope, all the curasows in the region are at adelaide (to the best of my knowledge;))

I've been looking at this thread, so I went on ISIS today and it said Adelaide has 0.1 and Taronga has 0.1. Is this right?

OK, i remeber when adelaide had 2 this must be the case then, well good on taronga, 2 states can seethem

taronga zoo does have a razor billed currasow-female from memory and also related to the adelaide birds. a bit like those other rare south americans-the condors

I was at Taronga last week and saw the razor billed curassow up close. For such an (I presume) ancient bird it looks really healthy - glossy plumage and nice clean (un-scaly) legs.

After all this talk about them, does anyone know where it is at Adelaide. Because I looked a while ago and couldn't find her (but i didn't know where to find her) can anyone please tell me where she is in the zoo.

I have asked my contact person at Auckland Zoo for any information on these .
I will post the response when I recieve it

THe adelaide zoo one could be either in the scarlet macaw aviary or the sun conure one

the official word from Auckland Zoo

According to the records, we have held two (at least that ever made it
to ARKS!) - both originally came from Adelaide Zoo: the first arrived in
1983 and died in March 1998, at 19 years of age. The second arrived in
1988 and died in March 1991 at 8 years of age. If you need any
additional information, I'm not sure whether any others have been or
still are held anywhere else in NZ (I can't find any records at ARAZPA
zoos), but it's certainly almost impossible now to import birds of any
species and collection planning has also become a lot more
advanced/specialised, so it's unlikely that they'd be back here anytime
soon.
