Chester Zoo Realm of the red ape

Dona has already arrived, last week I believe she arrived at chester

So if Dona is to be paired with 'special needs' Kevin when he arrives, that still leaves Sibu without a partner at present?

It may not be that simple to make a pair with 'Sibu' as he has a history of rejecting females- one of the reasons he was returned to Chester.

Its going to be interesting times, I wouldn't of thought they can house many more orangutans yet more and more are finding there way to chester.

Surely it is going to be difficult to house 3 males with only 4 females. there will be no room for isolation, or to split females up if they give birth. I don't understand why they want to import another male, when Tuan was only introduced last year to breed with the bornean females?

Chester have alot more room with RoRA and the old house. They have space to house the 3 males. I gather they also have the dens to split the femaes off to give birth.

Kevin is on his way to be paired with dona, while Tuan will have the original 3 females.

where dose that leave sibu ?

Still at chester untill they can find a mate.

Maybe they should send him to colchester, with his destructive nature he would be suited there as there doesn't seem much for him to destory, even if he did it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world :p

Oh, how cruel...;) Yes- maybe he could demolish the awful new enclosure. :D

They will need to keep these adult males from close contact with each other but I think they have plenty of room at Chester to do that as there are three big exhibit enclosures in the old house for a start plus the offshow dens etc and the Bornean part of ROTRA. I guess that is why Chester can take on another pair(Dona/Kevin) because they currently have more room than most places. If Kevin has no offspring its probably at least as important(maybe more so) he breeds as the other male Tuan.

Does anyone know about Dona's reproductive history?

Alan

For what I know, there is only one surviving descendant of her - male DAHI (*1997 in Dvur Kralove, hand-reared), parents Elmar + Dona. He was sent to Madrid few years ago, but since then I haven´t heard any news about him. Maybe he is a father by now?

Long Calling.

With the planned arrival of the male Kevin, that will mean Chester is housing four adult males in the whole building.

This might increase the amount of territorial 'long calling'(the gurgling/bubbling calls adult males make to proclaim territory in the wild) It is heard a lot less in captivity, probably as there's no reason for a single adult male to do it very often. But three or four males are more likely to stimulate each other.

Do our Chester 'regulars' ever hear territorial 'long calling' by the male Orangutans and which ones do it most?

I have not seen or heard an male orangutan call.

So I havn't noticed this at Chester, having said that am sure the male inmates know that each other are there I doubt they have seen each other through any of the mesh.

Its why the males have those big throat pouches. Its quite an experience but pretty rare to hear it in a zoo. Its a long bubbling/roaring call made by inhaling/expelling air through the air sacs and it swells in volume and can last several minutes before dying away- its used much like a Lion's roar. I can count on the fingers of one hand though the numbers of times I've heard a zoo male doing it. Probably as well as less stimulus in captivity than in the wild, they perhaps do it early or late on in the day when the zoos are closed.
