Edinburgh Zoo Recent arrivals

Vicuna are in the enclosure beside the Camels just now, sharing the camel house for the winter

not sure if they will be moved again though

other update is the Japanese Serow are due to move (or already have) up to the Highland Wildlife Park (HWP) to join the Snow Monkeys enclosure

this will allow the enclosure to be properly fenced to house the 3 male wolves coming down from HWP (side note: 1 male wolf staying at HWP to be joined by a female)

Relieved to hear that the HWP are still keeping wolves afterall. The only thing is the idea that it will just be a pair at HWP, when the enclosure there really deserves a pack structure. Hopefully more will be joining the two in the future.

i only heard about 1 female joining however they may build the pack up with females then introduce the male and the other males further down the line

The HWP website has confirmed the serow arrived at the park at the end of February.

As we head into spring, we are looking forward to 2009 being our most exciting year yet with more new animals set to arrive soon. The Japanese serow arrived at the end of February from Edinburgh Zoo. These small goat-antelopes were on the brink of extinction on their native island of Honshu due to over hunting until the government intervened. They live in dense hillside forests and here at the Park will eventually share an enclosure with our Japanese macaques. Both the macaques and the serow are currently off-show but the serow will soon be allowed out into the enclosure with the monkeys joining them in a couple of weeks.

What subspecies of wolf Canis lupus does HWP+Edinburgh Zoo keep?
Any plans to at some stage bring in pure-breds (central European, Spanish or Abruzzo) ...?

Any indications what new animal exhibit will come up on the sites vacated by the serow, camels et all. European otters, drill and Barbary macaque all mentioned and including the addax .... (confusing) ....! What is in the Masterplan then?

first parts of the Zoo masterplan were Rainbow Landings (a walk through exhibit housing Rainbow Lorikeets) and Budongo Trail (chimpanzees) which opened in 2008

the next two developments were due to be a new entrance way and a Rhino enclosure

this has been superceded by the attempt to bring Giant Pandas to the zoo

HWP masterplan is moving faster with the arrivals of the Mishima Takin herd, Chinese Goral, Bharral, Red Pandas, Amur Tigers, Japanese Serow & Macaques and soon to arrive Polar Bear, Camels, Amur Leopards, Wolverines, Pallas Cats and hopefully my favourite Snow Leopards further down the line

new thread started covering Births in 2009, New Arrivals 2009 and Departures 2009 - I copied a few of the updates made against this in to them to start off with
