Meet Leela, the newest red panda at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!

Leela is the first offspring of mom, Poppy and dad, Willie and currently weighs 1.5 lbs. She isn't quite ready to walk out on her own but is building strength everyday and will be more visible in the coming weeks.

Dr. Wallace is named in honor of Dr. Steven C. Wallace, professor at ETSU and curator of the Gray Fossil Site and Museum — where scientists discovered fossils of Pristinailurus, or giant red pandas, that lived in Tennessee millions of years ago.

To be honest, I didn't even know Chinese red pandas were kept in North America. (I thought Chinese red pandas were only kept in East Asia.)
