Red River Hogs in UK Zoos.

I took a picture of one of the first litter of hogs at Cheser zoo When I was 10. I'll put it up when I remember. Have you entered the zoo's photo competition?
 
No, I never bother. I did win a competition in 1986 for the Stoke Garden Festival, and I had one of my pygmy hippo photos published in John Frost's hippopotamus book.
 
New litters of Red River Hogs(2 in each case) have recently been born at ZSL and Colchester.

I'd like to see a zoo keep a few of the young and make up a 'sounder' which is how they live in the wild- sometimes in big groups.
 
Blackpool have had 3 born this year. I think Chester want to exhibit a large group.
 
really. i dont think the chester exhibit is really that big. unless they build another enclsoure to keep a large group and just stick with a pair/small group in their current enclsoure

i always thought it woud have been better to keep the hogs in an enclosure near their old enclsore near the lemurs.
 
London zoo currently have (2?) Red River Hog piglets, being parent-raised, a few months old at most.

That's good. THey are such a striking colour- and look even better in bigger numbers- not to mention the social stimulation they get from being in a bigger natural group. THe 'pair' situation isn't natural for pigs.

Yes, its two. They must be pretty young as the parents were together with no piglets just a couple of months ago.....

With all these zoos producing more piglets, I'm hopeful we'll start to see bigger groups being kept.
 
Woburn have a total of seven Red River Hogs. They are in an 'Animal Encounter area(like a children's zoo) The seventh- a single piglet, was born the day before my visit, and was outside with its mother.. They started with one female, then a male- the others are their offspring.

Its fairly large- but not an awful lot bigger than Chester's. Its more like a children's zoo paddock with a low wooden stockaded fence around it. The day-old piglet escaped by squeezing through(the first born since the new fence was put up) while I was there but they got it back. I reckon they could keep up to about a dozen without overcrowding.
 
baby hogs at Colchester Zoo

Two more litter of R. R. Hogs were born at Colchester Zoo a few weeks ago. Two babies in each litter. These hogs seem to be breeding freely now in a number of the collections where they are held.
 
Does anyone know where Blackbrook Zoological Park near leek will be getting theirs from as they are currently building their exhibt wear the Meerkats used to be.
 
the enclouser is going to be extended from the meerkats to the otter pond next door and the unused area behind. i am trying to find out more about where they are coming from but all i have so far is that it is either Germany or Holland i think it was
