Pride of the Prairie opens:

Red River Zoo opens Pride of the Prairie Exhibit featuring 'precious' bison

On Thursday, June 1, the Red River Zoo opened its long-awaited Scheels Pride of the Prairie exhibit featuring three bison — two female and one male — as well as prairie dogs, black-footed ferrets and salamanders.
The bison at Red River Zoo originate from Wind Cave National Park. This is the oldest general rescue facility where at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch 25 NY Bronx Zoo sent from the zoo and 21 bison from private owners were bred up.

There is also a link to the Lakota Sioux and remember the Wind Cave for the Lakota is Tatanka country, their homeland and part of the pte oyate (Buffalo Nation). North America's relationship with indigeneous tribes and the First Nations remains an unresolved stained blackest black set of paragraphs in the history of the Continent. Where history is not told beyond the glorious How the West was Won (or Lost if you look at what really happened), the "First Pilgrims","First Settlers" and "Immigrants".

The bison at the Red River Zoo (and Wind Cave National Park) do not appear to have any cattle DNA, as seen in almost all herds in human care. This makes them quite rare and an important part of bison conservation as most bison had to be bred with cattle to keep population numbers up.

This was also their first viable season, being only 4 years old, and considering both females had calves...I'd say these births are a huge success for the Red River Zoo and bison conservation nationwide! Congrats!

A while ago I spoke to one of the wildlife biologists at Wind Cave, and she sent me some interesting papers regarding bison genealogy. My main takeaway from that phone call and those papers is that the amount of cattle DNA within bison nowadays is a percentage considered negligible. I forget the exact percentage, I am pretty sure it's less than 1%.

Nice addition! Just where did the white-tailed deer go to?

Died off? Released? Transferred to another facility?

It's not like they're anything special, white-tailed deer are the most common species of deer in North America. I'd wonder why zoos within their native range even bother with displaying them if not for the good PR that they doubtlessly get by providing homes for rehab individuals.
