Rediscovered species 2023

There's a little map of the former distribution in that article - it was found right on Melbourne's doorstep.

Here's an earlier article from a few years ago when they first started looking for the dragon (it had recently been split as a full species, and had thus become the first lizard thought to have become extinct [historically] on mainland Australia): Why we're not giving up the search for mainland Australia's 'first extinct lizard'

and had thus become the first lizard thought to have become extinct [historically] on mainland Australia)
Yeah I remember hearing it being the first officially extinct mainland reptile (don't remember where I got the idea of officially from, think it was listed as extinct on the Wikipedia page? not too sure), which is why I'm really glad that they're actually still out there, and from the jist of the article it seems there's already a captive-breeding programme which is great.

They are breeding them at Melbourne Zoo.

There's a video of their breeding room on this link: Victorian grassland earless dragon: New video released after rediscovery
