Bristol Zoo (Closed) Rehoming of animals from the closed Bristol Zoo

I think with the penguins it has been announced that they are intended to move them to Birdland in the Cotswolds - though I'm not sure if anything has been said about the seals..
The penguins are no longer going to birdland, apparently three joining Whipsnades group

At the keeper talk yesterday, Connor the presenter said that the majority already went to Jersey, but the remaining 4 males are off to a new collection to hold them but said it wasn’t for him to say as there will only be two zoos in the world to hold them and both will be in the UK.

At other talks, they said that the Fur Seals have now been found a new home in the Uk and they were sure this would be announced soon by the new collection.

The Keas are off to Paradise Park Cornwall.

Lions, the keepers said they had heard that they were possibly going to Drayton Manner or Whipsnade, but they didn’t know for sure and this was only keeper talk at the Zoo. But they were happy to say this at the talk to the many hundreds watching, so I feel no issue to post here.

Flamingos are off to Flamingo Land ironically!

No one seemed to know where the Tree kangaroo was going :(

Giant Tortoises off to Jersey, a smaller tortoise, not sure on breed has gone to Dartmoor.

Mara and Warty Pigs have got a collection to go to, but keeper couldn’t remember where, said she would let me know if I saw her again that day when she found out, but didn’t see her again.

Hope that is of some help to some of you.

It will be interesting if Whipsnade made the switch to Asiatic lions to take those on - depending on timing the Blackpool male would need to leave first or be held in the lion quarantine but there is time in hand I guess. The lion speculation for the future of a Whipsnade pride continues!

I didn't know the ones at Colchester were elderly, (shows no one knows much about them) maybe you are right and when they die out their enclosure could be combined with the empty Wild Dog Paddocks (sorry this is a bit off topic), did Colchester have a big Lion Tailed Macaque group at one point? Maybe it will be better Bristol's going to a sanctuary or more of a temporary holding, though I though Bristol would keep/move to Wild Place more of their animals than it seems at the moment.
Colchester used to have a considerably larger group, around 7-9 but it has dwindled over the years, so I'm presuming the ones still there are now elderly. I don't even know how many they still have (2,3,4?) but pretty sure breeding ceased a long while ago now.

Bristol would be very unlikely to move a couple of old primates to Wild Place I think, particularly if its a species they no longer intend to keep..

Presumably after the Seals and Penguins have left, their exhibit will (eventally) be demolished, as it can't be redesigned for housing. I guess the same goes for some other non-listed large buildings like the Lion enclosure, Nocturnal House etc. But what about others like the Bird and Reptile Houses?

Most of the buildings on the grand terrace are being demolished minus the aquarium and amphitheatre, what was the forest of birds will remain their but unless buildings are listed they aren’t keeping them

For anyone interested there's video of the actual closure now. Very simple, with clapping, cheering and smiles, but no speeches. They put up the plaque and the staff pose for photos. Then the final three visitors leave the shop- a bit choreographed I think, with the very last one being a lady on a mobility scooter- then the staff go back in and the doors slide shut for the final time...after visits spanning very nearly 70 years I found it quite emotional too....:(

Unfortunately I can’t see this happening as it would go against the zoo’s geographic theming!

Personally I’d be ecstatic if it turns out to be Whipsnade that takes the Fur seals but, again, I can’t see it happening.

The 'forest of birds' aka formerly 'the Bird House' is a pretty old building too but I don't know its exact status.

I think you're right it would throw Asia into Africa! Probably lots of options. If they took the fur seals I hope they'd make the pool a bit bigger but what a treat if they did!

I wonder if the Fur Seals are moving to Yorkshire Wildlife Park or The National Seal Sanctuary in Gweek Cornwall?

Where has it been said the Seals are going to Whipsnade????
Would be surprised given earlier in the year when at Whipsnade was told the old sea lion exhibit will be used as a water storage facility and won’t be an animal exhibit again, so where would they go at Whipsnade?

I really do wonder where the fur seals would go, I'm not sure where in the UK has the spare space to accommodate 3 large pinnipeds... All that would have a pool would have it already used surely. Is it possible they could stay at Bristol until somewhere brand new in another zoo is built for them or is there not enough time for this?

I could think of two places they could go
1. The old sealion pool at Whipsnade zoo if its not used as water storage
2. Colchester and they could be mixed with the sealions as they live in similar areas in the wild

Why not Longleat? Plenty of room in the lake and they are robust enough to avoid confrontation with the sealions and hippos.

Total blue sky thinking on my part-I know nothing.

I don’t think it would be likely as many zoos don’t really want species from completely different continents mixing anymore, and I don’t think they would know how the sea lions would react

And although the hippos have been there a while I wouldn't think the hippos would tolerate the fur seals climbing on their backs like sea lions do because their used to the sea lions doing it

We'll have to wait and see what happens with the seals first before know whick UK collection is having them

Not sure hippos and Californian Sealions would meet that qualification either......
