Bristol Zoo (Closed) Rehoming of animals from the closed Bristol Zoo

Campaign launched to 'save Bristol Zoo'

Somehow I think this will bring more harm than good for the BZS, at least what I gathered from the article
I understand the sentiment of "Whipsnade and London work together in symbiosis - why can't Wild Place and Clifton?" - though where I find its flaw is that where Wild Place's current size is comparable to that of, say Chester, Clifton's size is not comparable even with London - ultimately supporting such a small institution is a moot point when one can close the smaller institution in favour of longer support of the institution with more potential. As nostalgic as said smaller location may be...

I agree, I will always like Bristol zoo gardens and it has great memories but they are asking that the zoo reopens a small zoo which they have explicitly said is creating loss for new animals which is just not going to happen unless they get a tonne of money and are able to redevelop both sites

Does anyone know which of the female gorillas are still breeding, I know touni hasn’t had any problems in regards to motherhood but let’s has a caesarean so she is probably never going to breed again and I know kala struggled with hasani but if anyone has any info please share :))

1. Touni is a normal breeding female and likely to have another baby(if allowed) after the usual birth interval.

2. Kera is unlikely to ever breed again- being desocialised it was young male Komale who fathered her only offspring, not Jock. She doesn't mate with him.

3. As she isn't rearing Hasani herself, Kala could easily produce another infant (if allowed) 'behind the scenes' while they are still living at the closed zoo.

4. The two young zooborn females will be potential breeders elsewhere in the future possibly- unless the zoo replaced Jock in which case they could stay but I don't think they would do that.

That’s interesting about Kera, I didn’t realise that komale was the father, I think unless jock passes away it’s very unlikely they’ll replace him as he is a very good dad I think Kala probably wouldn’t have a new baby until they move most likely but would be nice if she did

Did the lion tailed macaques, black and gold howler monkey or the agile gibbons ever breed
I visited many stones and never saw or heard about them having offspring and was just curious

Bristol bred Lion-tailed macaques several times in the past and the animals that formed the most recent group were probably either former breeders or were themselves bred there. I think they may have been contracepted more recently as I have not seen any young for many years. I believe when the zoo closed there were only a couple of elderly ones left, possibly candidates for a sanctuary now rather than a zoo transfer.. can't answer for the other two species.

The howler monkeys were originally kept in the old Monkey House and I remember hearing the male howling around 1999 when I visited with my little brother (who called him a 'sore-throat monkey'). They bred several times, and I have photos taken in 2009 of 2 youngsters playing together. On the other hand, I don't think the agile gibbons ever bred successfully.

Awh that’s sweet

Also I know I’m rambling lately, but does anyone know why the flamingo avairy over the years lost most of the species? It was before the announced closing but I was unsure why and now can barely remember what was in there :(

I think the Flamingos bullied the Avocets, and Turtledoves didn’t do well in such a large exposed area

At various times he aviary also had Red Shank, Little Egret, Hamerkop, a Red-breasted Goose, Marbled Teal and I think Meller's duck. By the end only flamingos were present, and Turtle Doves were labelled but I didn't see any.

Hoping for news regarding the seals soon, they are the only ones of their species in the UK so hopefully some other collection within the country is going to take them in.
