Reid Park Zoo Reid Park Zoo news 2021

Interesting last minute development. Though Plan D was most neutral and favored by the city wide survey, Plan G was favored by the local neighbors, so they came up with an alternative plan that combined D and G. The link above was posted yesterday (day before mayor and city council session) stating it would be proposed. Today at the session the city council voted to adopt this new alternative plan and the zoo stated they would support it. It sucks this will be delayed. But it seems like this was a good example of why public participation is needed early, as it would have revealed such strong emotions towards certain aspects of the expansion.

Edit: Also the plan seems to have no net loss of greenspace. So thats a real win for everybody. Looking at the area from above greenspace ain’t exactly a dime a dozen (although the golf course does waste space ).

All I will say further on the matter...

The expansion plan (new Asia area) has been modified yet again. The previous altered plan (mentioned above) would keep the exisiting zoo parking lot and put the Asia expansion north of this in what is currently a park maintenance yard (connected to the main zoo via a new bridge). A newly adopted proposal would put the Asia expansion in the current zoo parking area and a new zoo parking area in the maintenance yard. This will keep all of the main zoo connected and presumably negate the need for the expensive bridge. There is a diagram on the bottom half of this page: Gene C. A male Andean bear has arrived:

Joaquin the Andean bear back at Reid Park Zoo

Joaquin the Andean bear recently came to the zoo as part of the Association of Zoo and Aquariums Species Survival Plan.

Joaquin was born at Reid Park Zoo in 2002.

Currently, zoo officials say, he’s under a standard quarantine at the zoo’s Animal Health Center, and is expected to move into the Andean bear habitat later this month.

For years the zoo has been housing and breeding tamanduas off exhibit and only showing them to the public during occasional keeper demonstrations. In summer 2022 they will open a public exhibit in the South America area, which will eventually include a sloth.
