San Diego Zoo Remaining Hoof-Stock Species

Not only do they probably have a lot of space to keep animals behind the scenes at the Zoo, remember also that less than half of the SDWAP is accessable to the visitors, so most likely a lot of the gems discussed here is at present 'hidden' away from us there.

With regards to ISIS and San Diego, I was a friend of the late Marvin Jones, their registrar from 1981 to 1996. Too bad he died four years ago, he would have been the best person to call and ask, there was not a thing he didn't know about SDZ and SDWAP.

I do always wonder what species are off exhibit at the Wild Animal park since they do have such a large and inaccessible area.

Most of it is protected natural habitat, but there are lots of pockets in the park and recently removed gardens that are good for exhibits. The Park has breeding facilities to the north and west of the actual zoo-area. I think the North area is mostly birds and smaller animals and east is pens with hoofstock. I've seen the ones to the east, but the only two animals I saw were Przewalski's Horses and Beisa Oryx.

Yes at the Wild Animal Park if you go up through the botanical gardens at the very top is an off exhibit African wild ass exhibit that I happened upon... (I snuck off the path to see them).
Where is the hoofstock breeding facility? Near the zoo in balboa park? I didn't quite understand what you meant.

How have you seen them? Is it a medical care center or something? I've seen the sign and I've seen a king vulture in one of the cages closer to the road.

I was part of the Zoo InterQuest program and we did a thing near the area. I did not get to tour the facilities but I saw them and only a few animals.

Seriously? The Fall session of last year was when I went. You guys were lucky because you got to do GIS and ornithology...=( I read it on the blog site. Zoo InternQuest was good times, probably my best experience ever. I should probably shoot Kathy and Maggie an email about how my college entries are going.

Trust me... GIS was not fun. Nobody liked it. It was so confusing. It was a really cool experience though. I passed out in the Reptile House. Kathy resigned in the middle of our session :/ But an educator named JeNae started and she was cool. I'm only a junior so no college entries yet. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.
That's weird though... when we were near the quarantine area (which I assume is near the hoofstock breeding area) I looked for any off exhibit animals but I didn't see any. Hmmm. An employee told me they had bharal somewhere so I was looking for them.

Kathy resigned? O.o how come? And do you mean the quarantine area at the zoo? I never saw the quarantine area at the SDWAP, or is that on the east side of the zoo too? Bharal are supposed to go into some of the side exhibits along the Asian field exhibits based on the SDWAP master plan. Did you go into those exhibits with the jeep? Bharal are supposed to go in the exhibit left of the White Lipped Deer and Markhor, where Arabian Oryxs were when I went.

Kathy went to work for Polar Bears International or some polar bear foundation. So it was for a good reason. I'm so excited to see bharal. Did they tell you they were going on exhibit there? So you got to go into the white-lipped deer exhibit or the field exhibit? we went in the keeper truck into the field exhibit and fed greater one-horned rhinos and giraffes in East Africa.

No, I looked at the master plan posted somewhere. I posted something on it here: http://www.zoochat.com/22/future-san-diego-zoos-wild-animal-26580/index3.html The group that at least made images of the plans is called Alexor designs. We didn't actually go into the white lipped deer exhibit but we were inside of the Asian Plains exhibit looking into the white lipped deer exhibit. We couldn't move because two sarus cranes were trying to eat the bugs off the front of the vehicle.

Haha thats funny about the cranes. We barely had a chance to feed the rhinos because they had just had their vaccination shots and were running away. We literally chased one down.

So the Horn and Hoof Mesa was my favorite section of any zoo I'd ever been to. So i was extremely distraught when I found out it was demolished. I was lucky enough to have visited it many times over the years but never got that last goodbye haha. I recently visited the Zoo for the first time in a decade and as you can imagine was very underwhelmed with it's replacement: Elephant Odyssey.

So in an attempt to relive the glory days I'm going to transcribe a list of the mammals that were in that section of the zoo and others as well from the summer of 1999. Please excuse any spelling errors I'm copying it off of chicken scratch that I had written on a zoo map back then.

Wow, impressive list of the collection. I definitely remember some of the ones that are now gone, but not all. I knew they had saiga long ago but I don't remember ever seeing them. SDZ still has an excellent collection that would make it stand out as the best zoo in the world if it utilized their excellent collection with much better enclosures.

If I could steer the topic in a new direction, could we discuss the reasons for why SDZ's collection is deminishing? EO definitely hurt the ungulate collection but I have no clue why the bearded pigs left.
