Reminder: do not start new years news threads without content

It's that time of year again and people are keen to start new news threads with content for the new year.

We do have strict rules about creating new threads for a new year:
  1. do not create new year-based news threads until everyone is on the 1st of January
    • This means not before 12:00PM UTC (midday GMT) on the 1st of January - people in Hawaii are almost a full day behind people in NZ, so best to wait until it is the new year for everyone
  2. do not create new threads without meaningful content
    • Don't post until you actually have some news
    • Also, don't go hunting for the smallest bit of trivia about a zoo just so you can start a new thread!
To be clear:
  • Any thread news started for the new year before Jan 1st will be deleted
  • Any thread started without meaningful content will be deleted
If you are at all unsure - just post in the existing year thread and the moderators will split any new year content off into a new thread if and when we deem appropriate.

It is generally best to continue discussions about a specific topic in the year in which that discussion started - wait until there is new information before posting in a new thread.

To make it easier, here are the local times after which it would be okay to start a new year news thread:
  • 1:00 AM 2nd Jan (UTC+13) ... Auckland / Christchurch
  • 11:00PM 1st Jan (UTC+11) ... Sydney / Melbourne
  • 8:00PM 1st Jan (UTC+8) ... Singapore / Perth / Beijing / Hong Kong
  • 1:00PM 1st Jan (UTC+1) ... Paris / Berlin / Amsterdam / etc
  • 12:00PM 1st Jan (UTC+0) ... London
  • 9:00AM 1st Jan (UTC-3) ... Rio de Janeiro / Buenos Aires / Santiago / etc
  • 7:00AM 1st Jan (UTC-5) ... New York / Montreal / Toronto
  • 4:00AM 1st Jan (UTC-8) ... Los Angeles / Vancouver
  • 2:00AM 1st Jan (UTC-10) ... Honolulu
