When I visited in the Dolfinarium in March 2002 I saw two species in the rehabilitation area.

There were two Harbour Porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and a single dolphin: I suspect it was a Short-beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) but I'd be grateful if someone could confirm the species for me.

Cant help you with that, but perhaps it's better to send a mail to SOS Dolfijn ( translated into english, SOS Dolphin, should be easy to remember), the organisation that takes care of rescued cetaceans.

the records of SOS dolfijn shows that there were 2 Phocoena phocoena in the rehabilitation area between the end of April and the beginning of June. No other species are recorded in their public file.

Their website also indicates only ones that they were called in for a stranded Delphinus delphis since 1967. So the chance you encountered this animal is extremely slim.

I checked some other stranding data and there have been very few strandings of Delphinus delphis in Netherlands. The last cases were in 2006, 2003 and 1992 so I guess you saw another dolphin species in Harderwijk at that time. Most like a Bottle-nosed one.

Thanks for the info. I have emailed SOS Dolfin and will let you know what they say. The viewing of this animal wasn't great, but I'm 99% certain it wasn't a Bottle-nosed.

SOS Dolfijn were very helpful. The mystery dolphin was ... a female Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) named Renee.

Oh, very nice! I've never managed to see a Striped.
