Interesting but rather disturbing, paper PLoS ONE: How Abnormal Is the Behaviour of Captive, Zoo-Living Chimpanzees?

6 groups of chimps were observed intensively and behaviour not observed in wild chimps was found to be quite common in each group. The zoos (in the USA and the UK) were not named, but some may be identifiable by the group composition. We have all seen chimps doing unusual things in a zoo, particularly in the bad old days. Many zoos now provide improved housing and keep chimps in larger groups, but this may not be enough - particularly with animals that have already acquired bad habits.
