Les naissances à la Réserve

I am really glad to slowly the Sahrawi gazelle fauna that has been the mainstay of the private breeding facility in Almeria now finds several zoos having created breeding herds inside Spain for the endangered Cuvier's gazelle and since a few years also the Reserve Africain at Sigean in France. Note: the Zoo de la Barben in Pelisanne has taken on a bachelor herd a few years back.

Almeria (Parque de Rescate de Fauna Sahariana) has a considerable herd numbering in the hundreds+ and 2 other zoos have breeding herds (Lajita Oasis and Rio Safari Elche) and 2 bachelor herds in Castillo de las Guardas and Tabernas del Desierto open range parks.

What I know in numbers:
Elche Safari: 3.0
La Lajita: 3.12
Pelissane: 3.0
Sigean: 5.4 (not counting the current 5 calves)
Tabernas: 1.0

In range the Rabat Zoo holds another small breeding group (4.4). I do not have any information as to origins, but it may be possible that these are somehow native and not related to the Almeria founder stock.

Birth of six red-necked ostriches in Sigean.
The birth is exceptional because it is the first time that chicks have been born from eggs incubated by their own parents.

It seems that more zoos are not reporting first successful breeding success with red-necked ostrich. For a subspecies of conservation concern that is great news!

Hopefully similar can be achieved with a program for Somali ostrich Struthio molybdophanes.

Driving past Siegan on my way to Spain yesterday there were some sizeable fires in the general area that seemed to have closed down some roads. Is there any word on if any of this affected Siegan at all?

According to articles I could find, the fire has been stabilized but it is still burning. 650 hectares have burnt, including two habitations. It seems to be located to the south east of Sigean, and it's now threatening the villages of Port la Nouvelle and La Palme.

The zoo is to the north so it seems to be safe from the fire for now. According to Le Monde ( L’incendie parti de Sigean, dans l’Aude, a été stabilisé mais le vent inquiète les pompiers ) it hasn't been threatened by the fire.
