ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Reticulated Giraffe birth

It's a male:

The long-awaited male giraffe calf, standing just under 6ft tall, made his arrival just a week ago but is already proving a sturdy and curious newcomer, taking a look around outside his stable.

He was born to mother Savannah, her second calf, early on Thursday July 10th, after a 15-month pregnancy.

I think after this birth, the management at Whipsnade will have some tough discussions ahead of them about the viability of their herd.

From memory the only female born to the herd was the one that spent some time at Regents Park before returning to Whipsnade to replace females lost there . Am I correct and how many males have been born now ?

Yes, the mother 'Savanah' was born in the group. The father 'Bruno' comes from(I think) Warsaw. Their previous male calf is still with the pair. I saw them just a few weeks ago but had no idea the female was pregnant.

This group started as (I think) two males and three females, but with losses of the females and nearly all male births (not sure how many) it has really struggled. A fresh import of e.g. two additional females is what is needed to keep it going..

Nice photos too. I think Reticulated Giraffe are the most handsome- I hope they can keep this little group going despitre another male birth.:(

a bit old news czjimmy! i saw the baby when i visited in august! oh well better now than never. I recon twigga would be a good name (it means giraffe in some african language)

Notice I started the thread in July? ;)

ZSL has only just announced the winning name for the calf.
