2022 was a good year for the Wolf in the Netherlands : at least 16 cubs were born in various areas .

When wolves recolonise Europe, animals from different populations (subspecies?) are increasingly mixing together.

German state of Saxony announces first documented case of a wolf from Dinaric-Balkan population breeding in East Germany.

In addition, with the new pack of Tautewalde, a wolf from the Dinaric population has reproduced for the first time in Germany. This is proven by genetic tests of male wolf samples at the Senckenberg Institute for Wild Animal Genetics in Gelnhausen. The Dinaric population extends from Slovenia through Serbia to Bulgaria and Greece.

Here in Belgium the wolves have mostly been from the German-Polish population, with some individuals from the French-Italian Alpine population.

It is however disputed whether Italy has a subspecies distinct from the Eurasian grey wolf or not, and in either case, the border between those would be right in that Alpine region.
