Bristol Zoo (Closed) Review, 29/09/2009

This won't be that long as I kind of rushed the visit as I arrived pretty late.
First the lions: Someone suggested that Chandra was Back at Bristol and Kamal was at the Cotswolds. Not true, Kamal is still at Bristol.
  • Extra fencing added to red panda enclosure as there's now a sign saying their male has died and that they're getting a female from Rotterdam in a few weeks; I assume the fencing was for quarantine reasons.
  • Fruit bats were really active, watched them for ages. They make a brilliant exhibit!
  • Armadillo now lives with the Howler monkeys, the youngun seemed really interested in him. He was surprisingly active. The aguti that he replaced now lives in Zona Brazil.
  • Seal pup was born last mounth. Really active and cute.
  • Hippos were also outside, first time ever lol. I guess they're a new pair?
  • All the gorillas were split up, I guess it's something to do with mixing Kera in?
  • Ringtail lemurs have replaced the red ruffeds in the walk through, they're trying to mix them with the mongoose lemurs. The ruffs are now on the island.
  • The new arial play thing looked fun, adults can use it too. I refrained as I would have looked strange doing it alone lol.
All the animals were really active considering the heat which was great. All this and I never took my camera :rolleyes:
 
Bristol's own hippo was joined by a female from Marwell earlier in the year. ;)
 
Coolio, thanks. They seemed pretty interested in each other as they kept interacting through the mesh. Let's hope for calves :)
 
Extra fencing for Red Pandas may be to keep Foxes out. I believe they lost one to some illness related to fox scats in the enclosure?

'New lion' arrival notices must be from Kamal's arrival then?

No sign of an Okapi baby yet?
 
Possibly, I don't remember seeing it when the panda was still alive though.
 
Weren't they originally swapping the ringtaileds and red ruffeds round each day? It seemed to work well that way to me.
 
They wanted them mixed but they fought, so they re-homed one group of ringtails from the walk through and replaced them with the mongoose lemurs, but I assume they also fought with the ruffs, as the ruffs have now swapped with the group of ringtails off the island. They are now trying to get the mongoose and ringtails to live together, not sure on the progress of this though.
 
I went to Bristol last wednesday.

First thing in the morning there was a sign up saying the Red Panda enclosure was empty due to refurbishment, by the end of the day the new fencing was up and the sign had changed to the one about the male dying.

The Aye-Ayes were also off show are they back on display now and does anyone know why they weren't on show? There was a notice up but it didn't give any reason.
 
Actually I never saw the aye-ayes which is unusual, I never saw a notice about them being off show though.
 
I think it was me who might have mislead about Kamal and Chandra. But there were definately signs up saying there was a swap, so perhaps they were old ones... ?

A couple of weeks ago I overheard the keeper saying that the mongoose lemurs were allowed to roam the walk through for the 2 hours up to opening with the ring tails for two hours each day with the keepers monitoring. Not sure on the latest though.
 
The sign talking about the swap said "our male lion Chandra has recently been moved to CWP, and been replaced by Kamal from Twycross whose mate died in November".
 
I don't think Moti can have any more cubs.
 
We have it on good authority Moti won't breed again.

As Chandra was originally replaced by Kamal as he(Chandra) was suspect for fertility now, maybe another swap would be a good idea if there is still a chance the female at Cotswold can breed again. That's unless Chandra has had any success in which case not necessary. Kamal seems a better bet though and Bristol could just have their original pair again for the moment.
 
Hi all,

The red panda fencing is for quarantine of the new animal arriving from Rotterdam. There has never been a problem with foxes getting in to this enclosure.
The aye ayes were off show whilst their enclosure was cleared of cockroaches.
We don't have an okapi baby yet.
Oh and think this has pretty much been cleared up amongst yourselves, but no Chandra is not back, Kamal is still at Bristol!
