Review of Howletts (26/5/09) and Port Lymnpe (27/6/09)

@Marwell Dalek - I think you accidentally put the wrong month on the title for Port Lympne (unless you have a time machine!).

I will be visiting Port Lympne (my first trip out of the U.S.) in late October and am particularly interested in the small cats. I think when I looked at their map online, the small cats were spread out in a couple different areas. Can anyone tell me how they are grouped, as in which species are where and which ones are next to each other? Much thanks.

Jade? Yes, I did see her, in the enclosure next to the Fishing Cats. There's another down there with a larger group of lionesses.

Oh, didn't you know I had a TARDIS...:)

I can't really remember where they all exactly are, but I know that in the South-Western corner of the park near the bengal tigers and brown hyenas are Fishing Cats (VERY good enclosures for these), Ocelots, Indian Desert Cats, Pallas Cats, Margays and Rusty-Spotted Cats (Didn't see the latter three myself). There are also northern lynx at the roundabout near the bison.

Just thought i might correct you! ;)
The young lioness on her own is Samira was born with a leg problem from when she was born i think Saffiya may of accidently stepped on her leg a few days after being born? If i remember correctly she was paried up with Jabir but i dont think things went well so she is now on her own.She seems to be happy on her own and maybe younger siblings from Saffiya and Solomon could move in with her in the future.
Jade is one of the elder cats in the park who has bred and did live with her companion Juna who it looks like has died. They where both rather old about 16-20's i think when i went last year so sadly Jade might not last that long but will probably have about another 1-2 years ahead of her if she remains healthy.
Hopefully this will be useful to other people aswell :)
Regards

if i remember rightly the rusty spotted cats next to the red pandas had kittens a few days before i went on the easter weekend :D didnt see them though. the young lioness i was talking about earlier was opposite the brown hyena if that helps with naming her

Jade and Juna(?) are/were sisters from the same litter as their birthdate is labelled the same for both.

I believe Jade is also the mother of 'Saffiya' who has been the productive breeding female in recent years.

'Samira' was Saffiya's first surviving cub. I believe her leg was damaged by her inexperienced mother. Despite various treatments the ligaments or tendons on one foreleg are permanently damaged and she cannot support herself on that leg. When she walks she staggers in a circle- it may have been kinder to have euthanased her.

Yes that is right Pertanix i couldnt remember there birthdays but no i do.They where Sisters looks like Juna has died though as Marwell Dalek reported seeing only Jade there.
I thought Saffiya might of been related from one of these two,It all makes sense now :)
Thanks Pertinax

That is fantastic to have all those small cats together. (We do not have any indian desert or rusty spotted in U.S., though I will see them in France right before Port Lympne). Thanks for info.
