After I published the http://www.zoochat.com/38/orangutan-uk-435159/ I promised a Rhino in the UK database.

The current holders of Rhinoceros in the UK are:

Africa Alive!
Blair Drummond Safari Park
Chester Zoo
Colchester Zoo
Chessington World of Adventures
Cotswold Wildlife Park
Edinburgh Zoo
Flamingo Land
Folly Farm
Howletts Wild Animal Park
Knowsley Safari Park
Longleat Safari Park
Manor Wildlife Park
Marwell Wildlife Park
Noah's Ark Zoo Farm
Paignton Zoo
Port Lympne Reserve
South Lakes Safari Zoo
West Midlands Safari Park
Woburn Safari Park
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

There are currently 108 Rhinos kept in the UK.

Please correct me on any mistakes as I am a very clumsy person!

Thanks, Ed

I remember when i visited Edinburgh last October, there were two Indian rhinos. Where did the second (female?) one go and when did it leave?

Samir, the male who lived with Bertus moved to Kocaeli Zoo in Turkey last November.

At Edinburgh, they are still under discussion what to do next. The eventual goal has always been to have a breeding group.

So, it is a bit in limbo what will happen now. For breeding the enclosure and set up would have to be changed and some building work would be involved.

Good useful document. well done as it must have taken some time...

Black rhino- I notice that both animals at Folly farm are offspring of the ex-Chester male 'Quinto'. It confirms he fathered an offspring at his final home at Port Lympne. As the female Manyara is his halfsister and(to date) a non-breeder anyway(I believe she has medical conditions that unfortunately prevent it) they will need an additional female if they wish to breed. Or will they remain just as holders of 'spares'?

Thanks Pertinax.

Folly Farm will soon have the female Mala from Port Lympne to breed with Nkosi. Her arrival was delayed due to her having a skin condition.

Mala is no longer at PL. Nor is she going to Folly Farm

A few updates to Port Lympne. They now only have 2.8.

Nakuru passed away in 2013
Rukwa passed away in 2014
Rufiji passed away in 2015
Mala passed away in 2015

Also Damara's parents are Vuyu and Mwaniki.

Oh, sad news. Anyone know why they passed away?

Rukwa died of old age, I believe she was 43/44 at the time of her passing. Mala had been suffering for some time from a skin disease, so presume she passed away or was PTS because of it. Not sure on the others.

Thank you.

When was Zambezi II transferred to Howletts? I've still listed him at Port Lympne.

Since Whipsnade have done so well over the years breeding rhinos was there any real reason they deleted Black rhino from its collection one would believe having another holder within the country would be a plus in breeding terms!
