Rhinos in US Zoos

Interesting stuff. So michaeli in the ascendance for reasons of sex ratio.

Hopefully I'll get to see some minor at DAK this year, though.

I may just be stating the obvious here, but is D.b.minor being phased out of AZA collections? As I've noticed that the once esteemed breeding herd at Fossil rim has not produced a calf in quite sometime.

what makes D.b.michaeli more favorable? It's lower wild population and the possibility for global collaboration in a breeding program? Or just a higher captive population to begin with?

There was never a firm commitment to breeding minor regularly after transfer ex Zimbabwe. The European pop. - be it just a pair - produced more offspring per pair than any ... It was a faux pas emergency movement and now it is all over ....

Better to have them regionally transferred .. (Zambia, southern Tanzania).
(what is left now ... that is AND concentrate on the US michaeli)

So what's going on with rhinos? I know this is a US rhino thread but I don't see why we can't talk about world wide rhino news so I'd just like to report about Chester's new Black Rhino (ssp. michaeli) calf!

Speaking of Blacks vs Whites, are Whites more gentle? Is that why Birmingham and others doing rotational exhibits phased or phasing out rarer blacks in favor of more common whites?

I know Birmingham only keep Ricko a black but now are able to keep a breeder trio of whites that will mix with hoofstock and elephant. I see much more zoos mix whites and treat blacks almost like a predator as far as seclusion both in their species and cross species. Is that correct?

White Rhinos are a lot more gregarious and easier to work with than the other rhino species.

Which Us.Zoos are currently keep three rhino species ? I belive, San Diego Safaripark, Fort Worth ?,Cincinnati, and White Oak(which isn't a zoo ) ? Is that correct, and are there more ?

I certainly know Cincinnati has three species. A lot of zoos have two. I believe Bronx has nearly a dozen rhinos but only for Southern White and Indian.

When did Los Angeles end the keeping of Black Rhinos and Fort Worth the keeping of White Rhinos ?

How is"Rhonda"doing at L. A. ?She celebrates her 48th birthday in october and is the oldest Indian rhino in human care.

I know that Southwick's has two South White Females, Thelma and Louise. I know there was talk of finding a boyfriend for them (though I wish they would expand their enclosure a wee bit, maybe add some grass, not that I think the exhibit is an abominable one or that they look at all unhealthy. Does anyone know if there has been any progress in this or was it just talk?

Dunno. I just like to suggest you follow up this site: The Rhino Diaries - EARTH Ltd..
Drop your query over there and / or contact the site owners.

As you probably well aware Southwick's in Mendon is not an AZA facility and part of the ZAA network.

Where this may be more hopeful than with (AZA-/CAZA-accredited) zoos requiring white rhino cows...., is that surplus bulls are relatively easy to come by!

Since, they do great work with their rhino encounters supporting the International Rhino Foundation, I keep my fingers crossed for a bull!

Lowry Park Zoo has southern white and Indian. Currently they have one southern white male, three females, one female calf as well as two Indian Rhinos, 1.1. They have had 5 white calves and 3 Indian calves, IIRC.

Anyone knows where White Rhinos Khari (Kidogo's 3rd calf) and Ahadi (Alake's 1st) are at the moment?
