African Savannah theme to latest Rīga Zoo exhibit

“Saturday, 19 October saw the opening of a new exhibit at Riga Zoo based on the rolling plains of the African Savannah.

Visitors can now explore a 330-meter-long pathway to discover antelopes, zebras and the newest residents of the Zoo, Gelada monkeys.

The new exhibit complex covers an area of 1.7 hectares (almost one tenth of the whole area of the Zoo) and next spring it is planned to merge the new exhibit with the existing Giraffe House within a united African savannah wildlife exhibit complex, with zebras, giraffes and two antelope species sharing the large outside enclosure. Monkeys and smaller antelopes will be seen in separate enclosures”

Last year, they apparently also opened a new Latvia-themed exhibit complex with golden jackals and native fish among others.

A rather suggestive piece of journalism is the "Intrigue ..." story!

It seems like a dark ages conspiracy theory on the part of a rather bureaucratic Council and (possibly) out right slander of the (current) zoo management. Seems to have been born more out of political convenience and conniving than any actual wrongdoing(s).

Does anyone have any information on Riga Zoo's lions? Specifically male lion Kali. I've found that he's sired two cubs, Varis and Teika. Are those two cubs still at Riga? Has he sired any other cubs?
