BioParque do Rio Rio de Janeiro Zoo (Bioparque do Rio)

I plan to visit Rio in March this year and have a couple of questions around visiting the zoo.

First of all is safety. There is a lot of info on the internet regarding crime in Rio and it's hard to know how much of it is scare mongering, and what the situation is really like. So, how safe is the area around the zoo? I was thinking of taking the metro to Sao Cristovao and walking through the park to the zoo, is that wise?

Secondly, is ZTL up to date? Is there a good collection of South American fauna in the zoo?

Thanks for any replies.

hi, as someone who already visited the zoo, i can tell you that the area around the zoo is very safe, and yeah is considered safe if you decide to take the metro to quinta da da boa vista and walk through the park to the zoo, i used to do this when i was younger. and there is a great diversity of south american animals, including jaguars, capybaras, rheas, capuchins, macaws, peccaries, tapirs, tamarins, curassows, sloths, iguanas, agoutis, maned wolves, caimans and many more.

Thank you for the reply. It looks like a nice walk through the park (on google maps). I'm looking forward to seeing the zoo and its collection.

The zoo has announced the opening of a new complex/exhibit focused on Axolotls, called "Reino dos Axolotes" in portuguese (Axolotl Kingdom, in english). A similar exhibition was opened some time ago in AquaRio (Rio de Janeiro's Aquarium), so the animals in the zoo probably came from there or from the same place the aquarium obtained them: Bioparque Pantanal. It will be inaugurated on October 4th
