Chester Zoo RIP Patna :(

That's unfortunate.

This is a big surprise, yes you could see the problem when he walked but you could also see him trotting in the paddock from time to time.

Such a shame, but on the positive side I hope they can bring in an older breeding male now.

yes, a nasty surprise...:( I believe Patna wasn't growing as fast as the female and was smaller? The bad leg could also have hindered mating attempts when they were older too. The problem now is to find a male of the right age class to replace him.- If one of the Edinburgh ones is a genetic 'match' it would leave the other alone.

He was much smaller, and it was not until Chester placed identification boards up I realised how small he was when the two are a very similar age.

Very true about the bad leg affecting him being able to cover the female. We shall have to just wait and see who the studbook recommends and whether there are any free males of the right age and genetic 'match'.

Very sad news. I saw him less than a week ago and he looked fine to me then. :( Has he got any half or full brothers that could be paired with Baatchi?

Kifaru Bwana is the one who could indicate what rhino(s) might be eligible to replace him.

Would there be the chance to save some of his semen to be frozen, and used at a later date, or was he not yet sexually matured?
