The film will be released this summer.

An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

It looks quite impressive from the trailers but I don't know if I want to watch it; to be honest, I'm scared of chimpanzees and am always awe-struck by gorillas.

I think there is a lot more to them than we understand.

I guess I don't want to be thinking of this movie when I go to the zoo!

It sounds to me a lot like the 1972 film "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," which was part of the original series.

But, the trailer did look impressive.

The film is not based on the specific plotline from the original series, but instead takes elements from the earlier movies to create an original origin story.

In a segment of a video blog post, director Rupert Wyatt commented on the originality of the plot: "This is part of the mythology and it should be seen as that. It's not a continuation of the other films; it's an original story. It does satisfy the people who enjoy those films. The point of this film is to achieve that and to bring that fan base into this film exactly like Batman Begins."

In an interview a year earlier, director Rupert Wyatt allegedly said, "We've incorporated elements from ["Conquest"], in terms of how the apes begin to revolt, but this is primarily a prequel to the 1968 film... Caesar is a revolutionary figure who will be talked about by his fellow apes for centuries... This is just the first step in the evolution of the apes, and there's a lot more stories to tell after this. I imagine the next film will be about the all-out war between the apes and humans".

I think it looks great and cant wait to see it!!

Wil probably go the day it is released.

Definitely agree chimps are scary!
 
Chimps commit premeditated murder! of other primates, not for food! The only animal l know to do this.
 
By the way, I was thinking that it would be impossible for apes to take over, not least in terms of numbers and for the fact that humans have weapons and a much wider distribution over the planet. The director's repsonse to this is:

“['Rise of the Planet of the Apes'] is about leveling the playing field in terms of if a revolution were to start in our day and age with a species that was looking to take on humanity, I think we could all safely say that it wouldn’t have a chance in hell. We are the alpha of our world. But if you were to take certain things away from us, whether it be numbers or technology or whatever you want to call it, of course there’s that chance.”

The general concept of the "Planet of the apes" and special effects are good.

But previous film had stupid screenplay and was, frankly, cold and unlikeable. I doubt if I will see this one. I'm afraid it will be another idiotic story killing a good concept.
 
I saw this movie on the weekend, and it wasn't that bad at all really, reasonable story and effects. Although the gorilla and orang-utan were a bit too similar in size I thought.

There were a few scenes which included a chimpanzee exhibit and a aerial shot of chimpanzees escaping the zoo (presumably the San Fransisco Zoo?), does anyone know if this was shot at an actual zoo at all?

How can you compare a film made ten years ago by a completely different group of people with a completely different concept?

That's like saying you wouldn't watch another shark movie because the one in Jaws looked a bit rubbery!

Can you direct me to an article on this? I have never heard this to be the case-the only Chimp killing I have ever come across is for food.

(I also wonder if any zoos feed their chimps meat as I saw a TV show yesterday stating only 50% of a chimp's food is fruit-the rest is meat-I've certainly never heard of it)

I think this is way exaggerated but zoos feed indeed some meat (usually beaf and poultry) to chimps, mostly boiled, but certainly nowhere near 50 % of their diet. They also get some eggs.

It's an interesting area, chimps patrol along their border and will deliberately attack and kill lone males. There are often 'ritualistic' bites on vulnerable areas.

I was wondering the same thing re: what zoo it was filmed at. The San Francisco Zoo does have a horrible, outdated concrete chimp exhibit, but it is not quite as horrible as the one in the movie.

I think it was filmed in the old zoo in Stanley Park in Vancouver based on the movie credits. There was a small zoo that was shut down in the 1990s but some of the cages were left standing. The old zoo was used in an episode of "The Lone Gunmen" television series that coincidentally was about a super-intelligent chimpanzee on the lam from the lab that created it.
 
I thought everything about Rise of the Planet of the Apes was fantastic. There's even a bonobo, something I've never seen in any movie. It's the chimp with the scars on his face. The way the makers of the film animate the apes is really cool, they literally animate each ape around the actors as they move.
