River Wonders River Safari details revealed

I also thought about amazon dolphins, but it's more difficult to find them in captivity, there are only three facilities around the world that have them: Duisburg Zoo (one old male), Quistococha Zoo in Peru (one rescued male) and Valencia Aquarium in Venezuela (a small group). but I don't see any of these zoos giving some of their dolphins. That's why I said Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, I know that a zoo/aquarium in Singapore has some.

It would be awesome if they could source some Amazon River dolphins...could have an exhibit featuring the dolphins behind glass and some macaws and monkeys in the background on land..would be such a realistic interpretation of the Amazon...

@Chlidonias: Yes, the sneak peeks are artists' drawings of the planned exhibits uploaded on the website. Not sure why the site doesn't load for you though.

@aw101 & ocean_boy: I noticed the picture too. But I think its just the artist expressing a bit of creative freedom. I've not heard of any plans to bring in dolphins for River Safari and freshwater dolphins are too difficult and controversial to acquire.

The unrelated Underwater World aquarium in Singapore does have a pod of 6 Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, but they wouldn't fit in with the "Amazon" theme. Neither is the aquarium likely to let go of them. There has been recent criticism about the dolphin pool: Dolphin Lagoon too small

Thanks Zooish for your answer! It's a pity that the zoo does not have "official plans" (or at least as far as we know) to add dolphins. I'm sure that River Safari can make a great exhibit for them. But at least we'll have the opportunity to see the new manatee enclosure. I can't wait to see it!

Seems like River Safari will also be featuring Red-backed Bearded Sakis. A local TV show featuring interesting occupations had an episode about Singapore Zoo vets earlier in the week, and about 2.50 minutes into the show (link below), the vets do a full check-up on a newly arrived female Saki. The show is in Chinese though, but the images largely explain themselves :)

Behind Every Job: Behind Every Job Episode 6 on MSN Video

Looking at the medical form the vet was filling out at about 4.30 minutes , 2.2 monkeys arrived in August. The monkeys came from Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Wildlife Park in S.Africa.

Five Giant Freshwater Stingrays have arrived in Singapore from Thailand, slated for display at River Safari which is opening in 2012. All five are only 2 years old and weigh roughly 10 kilograms each, with each measuring about 1 to 1.5 feet across. Video link below:

sadly still unable to access the site, on either of the computers I use (at work and at home). It just says unable to find it, but suggests a cached link. That cached link does take me to the site but none of the pictures will load and none of the linked titles (eg "Amazon River") will work either. Its very wierd.

I was looking through the sneak peak photos and in the Amazon section they show manatees and river dolphins. Is River Safari really going to obtain Amazon River Dolphins and Amazonian Manatees?

the dolphin question was fielded a few posts back (answer: not likely). The manatees are already at the Singapore Zoo and are simply being moved to the River Safari (but they're West Indian manatees not Amazonian)

well better late than never: I have finally managed to access the River Safari website! Yay! The link that works for me is River Safari - Wildlife Reserves Singapore (for anyone like me for whom the previous ones in this thread don't work).

Looks good, although I dislike the polar bear exhibit -- concrete "ice formations" always look like crap in reality. I am excited about the wolverines though!

Overall, if they can create the River Safari with the same attention as they have recently done with the Naracoorte Caves exhibit (judging by the photos Zooish recently uploaded) then it will be fantastic.

Quick Question: on the FAQ page it says "When is the River Safari Opening? 1st Half 2012" -- does that mean its opening in the first half of 2012, or does it mean that only one part of the River Safari is opening in 2012 (and the rest at a later date)?

@Chlidonias: Believe it or not, but the result when clicking on your link is: "Could not Connect to Server".....

ah interesting. It still works fine for me. I think it must be a regional thing (but I don't know why or how that would be)

If i'm not mistaken PJA architects created Naracoorte Cave and are involved in River Safari, so fingers crossed. :)

River Safari is opening in the first half of 2012 (between March and June I would reckon). All the exhibits featured in the website are expected to be open then.

Small update on River Safari: The "River Rapids" thrill ride has been shelved and the Frozen Tundra exhibit (with polar bear, wolverine and raccoon dog) will be incorporated into the Singapore Zoo instead. These changes are presumably due to cost issues.

A correction to an earlier posting, the park has obtained the critically-endangered Black Bearded Saki according to ISIS, not the Red-backed as previously mentioned. The Giant Otters are likely coming from Hamburg Zoo.

Well, Frozen Tundra did not fit the theme of River Safari, so I think it is much better placed in the zoo.

When is the frozen tundra part likely to open to zoo visitors? Would it be before river safari opens or later?
