The designers had initially gone for the carpet grass landscape (no scrub, few trees), but thankfully they decided to make the exhibit look more like a forest and less like a golf course.
 
The Giant Panda "preview" in December has been priced at a somewhat reasonable $5 (Singapore dollar) per adult and $3 per child on top of the standard Zoo admission.

I was certainly expecting something more cut-throat...
 
that's astoundingly cheap! Is that just the giant pandas, or the other components of their exhibit as well (red panda etc)? [I think you answered this on an earlier occasion but I forget].
 
@Chlidonias: It is for entry to Giant Panda Forest complex, which comprises the giant panda, red panda and golden pheasant exhibits, as well as the kitchen and lab viewing area (and gift shop + cafe of course).
 
Do we know the expected opening date of the River Safari? I'm planning a trip to Singapore next year but want to wait until it is open.

@zankara: River Safari is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2013 (that's what they're saying for now).
 
Giant Panda Forest opens on 29th November. Entry will be via the Singapore Zoo and will require a standard Zoo ticket plus a $5 add-on ticket. The catch is that each ticket is good for only a 15-min viewing...

@DavidBrown: Nope. In 1990 a pair of pandas was loaned to Singapore Zoo for a short-term display lasting 100 days.

Back in the 80s and 90s such short-term displays of rare animals (particularly those with demanding husbandry or diets that made them difficult to keep as permanent displays) were quite 'fashionable' at the Singapore Zoo, which included golden snub-nosed monkeys, koalas and snow leopards.
 
A somewhat dated photo (from July 2012) showing the construction of the Amazon River Quest boat ride section. If the plans have not been altered, the enclosure on the right is for Tapirs, while the one of the left is for a primate species.

The Beijing Zoo also requires an add-on ticket for their Panda Exhibit, which includes giant pandas, red pandas, and a family of golden snub-nosed monkeys and crested ibis, and until several years ago, the Chinese monals. Thus don't blame the zoo, just imagine even in panda's home country you have to pay extra ticket to see them!
 
The giant panda exhibit was officially opened this morning, ahead of the River Safari's opening early next year. Link to Yahoo article below. In the video embedded in the article, there's a quick glimpse of the work-in-progress Yangtze River section (for Chinese alligators, giant salamander, turtles and Chinese sturgeon) and Mekong River section (part of the giant catfish and stingray tank is just visible in the background at about 18 seconds).
