Rizz Carlton's guide to zoological institutions in Java

Rizz Carlton

Well-Known Member
Welcome, you might know me as an active user in the Indonesian corner of ZooChat. My intention in making this thread is to improve my own knowledge on my local zoos by encouraging research and to bring that knowledge to you all. Bali is the No. 1 destination for foreigners, not excluding ZooChat users. There have been threads for guide in Bali, so I decided to make one for Java. Being the socio-economic heart of Indonesia (Which is an issue of it's own), the island hosted the majority of the country's zoological institution of varying sizes and quality. I hope by making this thread, I can bring more awareness and attention for international users and also fellow Indonesians on Javanese zoos, aquarias, and other facilities.

I think the structure would be like a journal of mine, where I will recount any details and informations on future visits that I hope might help for your very own visits. Additionaly, I'm more than happy to not only answer questions regarding zoos and aquariums, but also other stuffs like transportations, FnB, and more in Java.

[Transportation: Commuter train]

One of the most important question for you to answer is how you get around anywhere in your place of destination. With zoos and other facilities in Java, getting from one place to another might either be tricky or costly. While going from one town to another might require train ride, private driver, bus, or even just flew via airplane, some cities and their nearby towns have multiple zoos and wouldn't require much effort in finding transportation. Larger cities, like Jakarta and Yogyakarta, have commuter line service. Hopefully this would be a cheaper alternative for you all.

We're going to talk about navigating the commuter network in Jakarta and Yogyakarta/Surakarta. Additionaly, worth noting that I will talk only about what commuter line you should stop at on nearby facilities and where do you go there from, as well as approximate price. I will try answering further questions.

P.s a lot of these stations doesn't directly connected or even located across to the facilities you seek. From these stations, I'd recommend immediately order a taxi or other services.

There are commuter service for Bandung (Also serve trip to Garut and Purwakarta) and Surabaya (Also serve trip to Lamongan, Pasuruan, and Malang). But, it's been years since I last went to Bandung and I have yet to set foot on Surabaya. I wouldn't include them here, but I'll try to do further research if asked.

Jakarta and nearby towns
upload_2025-3-30_0-33-9.jpeg

Within the main city of Jakarta, going to the Manggarai station (Which are the central hub judging by the above map) might help in navigating elsewhere. But, you had to transit from other stations to go to other specific places. My list of the nearest stations to each facilities are;
  • Ancol Dreamland (Faunaland, Jakarta Birdland, SeaWorld Ancol, and Samudra Ancol): From Manggarai, enter the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route. Which on certain schedule, the train would go up to Jakarta Kota from Bogor or Manggarai themself. From Jakarta Kota, go on transit to the Jakarta Kota-Tanjung Priok route. You will depart on the third station, Ancol, and order a taxi from there.
  • Habitat Park: The park is located in a very urbanized part of Jakarta, so public transportation are relatively easy and connected. There are not station directly close to the park, however, but I recommend stopping at Sudirman from Manggarai, en route to Tanah Abang.
  • BXSea and Aviary Park - Interestingly, the station Jurang Mangu directly connected to BXChange, where the BXSea is located. If you're from Manggarai, you'd like to transit to Tanah Abang, which went on a single route to the Merak port. From Jurang Mangu, you can directly enter the mall to go to the aquarium, or order a taxi to go the Aviary Park.
  • Jasmine Park: From Jurang Mangu, after three stops, you should stop at the Cisauk station and order a taxi from there.
  • Jakarta Aquarium & Safari: The nearest station is the Grogol station. From Manggarai, you should go on the route to Tanah Abang, and just wait until the train depart to Grogol and order a taxi from there.
  • Taman Mini Indonesia Indah: From Manggarai, enter the train en route to Citayam, you should stop at the Tanjung Barat station.
  • Ragunan Zoo: From Manggarai, go to the train en route to Citayam and drop at the Pasar Minggu station.
  • Animalium BRIN: The farthest facility you'd reach via Jakarta's commuter line. From Manggarai, go to the train en route to Citayam. From there, wait a while until the train eventually end in Cibinong.

Yogyakarta and Surakarta
upload_2025-3-30_0-34-18.png

The commuter from Yogyakarta to Surakarta and vice-versa are a simple back-and-forth network. If you're from either of the two cities, my recommended stopping point are at;
  • Yogyakarta/Tugu: Located on the popular site, Malioboro, it's one of the two main station of Yogyakarta. From there, you can order any transportation service to Gembira Loka Zoo. I wouldn't recommend immediately going to places like Suraloka Interactive Zoo from the station, as these are generally located very far from the main city.
  • Solo Balapan: Located in the main city of Surakarta, from there, you can order a taxi or other services to Solo Safari for a relatively short distance.

How to access commuter service
Prices tend to change depending on distances, but are generally very cheap for most travellers. Ranging from Rp. 3,000 ($0.18 cent) for the first 25 Km, where the price will increase by Rp. 1,000 on every next 10 Km. For example, the ticket price from Yogyakarta to Solo Balapan are Rp. 8,000 ($0.48 cent).

Go to https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...CBwQAQ&sqi=2&usg=AOvVaw222_QcWwXUrf6XfLz-8BXt for better price estimate.

On how to get the ticket and such, the option are;
  • Directly order the ticket from the commuter service ticket at the station.
  • Get an KMT (Kartu multi-trip or multi-trip card) or any locally-available e-money cards. You can get this card from the station service, or buy them from retail stores (Recommend stores are Indomaret or Alfamart).

[Warning on innacurate signages and label]

For this quick information, it have to be informed and warn that Indonesian zoos and other facilities tend to not always have the most accurate signage, which in reality have a very different species. This stems from either outdated signs that are yet to be taken off, lack of informations by the zoos themselves, lack of attention to updated taxonomy, ignorance from the zoo (Fully-aware that they have certain species, but choose the wrong label), or in some cases, even artistic liberty for the design of the animals seen in the sign. In even worst case, the exhibit don't have any signs or informations at all!

Sadly, this are a very common problem in Indonesian facilities as a whole. This eventually result in a very messy species database and information on ZooChat, Zootierliste, and elsewhere. It's important for you to always check your photo again and do a lot of research yourself, not retelling the mistakes by the facility, before uploading it. Identification tool or website that might help are iNaturalist, Fishbase (For fish), eBird (For birds), and Biolip.cz, not to mention always try to seek advice from your taxonomic friends or experts.

These are some examples (And the actual animals in some cases).
  • "Varanus salvator komaini" are still widely used in Indonesia, despite now considered to just be a melanistic population of varanus salvator macromaculatus.IMG_20250404_042514.jpg
  • Example of artistic liberty, showing an fire salamander as the default form of the albino tiger salamander. Sign above, actual animal below (Credit to @snowleopard)PhotoCollage_20250404_043058211.jpg
  • Taxonomicaly-incomplete signage like this are common, especially for fish and invertebrates, which would lead to confusion and harder time identifying the animal (Photo credit to @Caribbean Flamingo)IMG_1200.jpeg
  • Innacurate sign, instead labeling the more well-known species over the actual newt species that already gain little to no attention (Signage photo credit to @Caribbean Flamingo)PhotoCollage_20250404_044844363.jpg
  • Signed as the Victoria's riflebird, in reality they have the magnificent riflebird (Bird photo credit to @snowleopard)PhotoCollage_20250404_045528684.jpg
  • Example of outdated signs from Ragunan Zoo, the two animals (eland and leopard) are not on-display as of August 2024, the elands were already gone from a decade ago! (Signs photo credit to @snowleopard)PhotoCollage_20250404_050427893.jpg
  • Some huge error are seen below, where the incredibly elusive "lutra sumatrana" are signed but in reality are smooth-coated otter. All two current holder of smooth-coated otters in Indonesia (Taman Safari Bogor and Lembang Pak & Zoo) label them as that rare species, for unexplained reasons, though limited knowledge of the actual lutra species might be the case. (Sign photo credit to @snowleopard)PhotoCollage_20250404_051116724.jpg
  • In some cases, exhibits have virtually no actual signages at all, instead replaced by a general information table like seen below. This could lead to confusion of wether this is an actual species list that they have or not. (Sign photo credit to @snowleopardupload_2025-4-4_5-18-42.jpeg

[Addressing taxonomy in Indonesian facilities]

I can't never stress enough how innacurate and outdated a lot of signage in Indonesian facilities are. I always encourage you to always do your own research first through any means or ask people with the knowledge, actual zoology and taxonomy are different from the labels given by childlish Youtubers. I think being open-minded and generally always be open to learn more is something a lot of people appreciate most, including in ZooChat, a lot of people sees living, breathing animals as fancy objects unfortunately.

There is one taxa that we will talk about, which is the most misidentified and un-updated, king cobras.

King cobra
King cobras, once considered to be monotypic within the species ophiophagus hannah, have been separated into multiple other species. The one you will often see in Indonesia is the ophiophagus bungarus. The taxonomy was only been revived last year in 2024, previously described by German zoologist Hermann Schlegel in 1837 but later though to be synonym with ophiophagus hannah.

Please check this link below for the abstract.

Taxonomic revision of the king cobra Ophiophagus hannah (Cantor, 1836) species complex (Reptilia: Serpentes: Elapidae), with the description of two new species | European Journal of Taxonomy

To put things short, the king cobra population found in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, southern Thailand, and parts of southern Philippines are the ophiophagus bungarus. To distinguish them physicaly can be a bit tricky, though they might lack any bands on their neck. But, within the context of Indonesian zoological institutions, a lot of king cobras are often caught from the wild and/or rescued near human settlements, so they're obviously the local ophiophagus bungarus.

So, where do ophiophagus hannah now found in? They're now found in eastern Pakistan, northern India, Myanmar, Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia), and central-northern Thailand, as well as other nearby areas.

Here are photos of ophiophagus bungarus in Indonesian facilities available on ZooChat:

Funnily enough, so far, only Jagat Satwa Nusantara in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah label their king cobra as ophiophagus bungarus.

Seems to be very much present from the Instagram link below.

I wonder what's the motivation behind the rebranding, their social media pages aren't super clear. Looks like they're more focusing on the themed park aspects, it's something Jatim Park actually attracts more than their extraordinary animal collections.

I wonder what's the motivation behind the rebranding, their social media pages aren't super clear. Looks like they're more focusing on the themed park aspects, it's something Jatim Park actually attracts more than their extraordinary animal collections.

As per the name and the article linked by @Fargusno , it was a suggestion taken from the mayor of Batu to create a park that's more accessible to local Batu residents, as opposed to the other Jatim Parks which are geared towards visitors from other cities. This is apparent in the pricing as well, the fee to enter Ekonomis Park is 1/5th of Batu Secret Zoo's.

It might also be that Predator Fun Park was never too popular in the first place, with visitors choosing BSZ to see animals. Doesn't help that Predator Fun Park was around a 5min drive from BSZ rather than Eco Green Park which was right next to BSZ.
