Rockhampton Zoo Rockhampton Zoo's New Chimp Exhibit

Do you know if they plan on getting any more? Seems a lot of money just for 2 chimps.

I totally agree with you Ashley, but I have not heard anything else as this is a recent press release. Monarto Zoo, also in Australia, has recently finished their multi-million dollar chimp habitat, and so there might be a lot of movement of the species "down under".

There have been plans to update this exhibit for a very long time so it's good to see something a little more definite has been put in place.

yep, rockhampton plans on getting females in 2010. monartos exhibit opens this week, and the info on dreamworld....i just know

The cost of zoo enclosures these days is just ridiculous!
$1.2 million?
How much of that is "cream" paid to so-called "consultants?" And I'm not just having a go at Rockhampton over this - it seems that based on the amount of building materials involved, the average enclosure in any zoo costs 10 to 15 times as much as it should.

It would be very interesting to read a quote of construction costs. It always seem like exhibits are over priced. Taronga "great southern seas" comes to mind!

everything taronga zoo does these days is expensive; sadly money is not a guarantee of a magnificent exhibit though in taronga's cases, apart from some minor tweaking i think they get what they pay for. big price tag-marvellous exhibits

I agree that some spectacular exhibits are the result, but I just feel that one of the smaller zoos like Darling Downs or Mogo could achieve so much more with a sum like $1.2 million.

Of course we could - but then we have to work for ours!!

And you are right about the exorbitant amount that can go to consultants - often for an end result that could have been better designed "in house".

Let's not forget Rockhampton Zoo has free entry so the council would have to fork out a lot for running costs.

its not just zoos mate. its anything done by government. its costing 5.6 million to upgrade my local roundabout.

over five mill for a f%&*%ing roundabout!

as for exhibits being overpriced...

the most naturalistic exhibits are just that, natural - you're better off using a wire cyclone fence and spending the millions on some really great plants that end up screening everything out anyway.

This is exactly what I think. I doubt most zoo visitors are going to care if they get the odd glimpse of some wire if they're going to see active animals in an exhibit that approximates their natural environment.

I was at Rocky Zoo recently and can confirm that construction is galloping along.

The boys won't know themselves in their new home.

This is an exciting development for a small regional zoo.
