News article on Holly the chimp musician: Rockhampton Zoo's ukulele-playing chimp strikes a chord
They're here!
Introducing Leakey and Alon - the newest members of the Rockhampton Zoo family. They are now ready for the public to come and say hello, so please come and see them.
They have recovered very well from their journey from Tel Aviv, Israel. It's been a huge journey for them and we thank the Rockhampton public for understanding and allowing them to settle in to their new surrounds over the last few days.
Leakey is a 20yr old female chimpanzee named after the famous paleontologist, Louis Leakey, who funded all of Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research along with other researchers of great apes.
Alon is a 7.5yr old male Chimpanzee. Alon is Hebrew for Oak Tree, implying that he will grow to be a very big boy.
I figured you would be interested in their history so I had a quick look. Both are subspecific hybrids, and both were born at Ramat Gan. The female Leakey was born 30 Dec 1994 and male Alon on 29 Jan 2008. They both were born to different parents (i.e. both had different mothers and different fathers) but the father of Leakey was also the father of Alon's father.Alon and Leakey have arrived and are now on display:
